I’m interested in applying for Yale’s Graphic Design MFA program, but I would like some feedback (preferably from someone who has already been through the application process) on whether I would be a competitive candidate.
I’m drawn to Yale because of their open and experimental approach to graphic design, and I’m seeking a program that will be both demanding and self-directed. I have many interests outside of graphic design, and I want a curriculum that’s flexible enough to allow me to explore more than just art and design. Another big draw is the student work. I love what I’ve seen coming out of the program and it’s definitely the direction I want to take my own portfolio.
Note: I’m young (just turned 23) so I imagine that my biggest challenge will be in the area of professional experience.
UNDERGRAD
I spent one year at SAIC, then transferred to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I graduated summa cum laude (3.97 GPA) with a BFA in graphic design and a minor in art history. (I left SAIC for nonacademic reasons–I was in good standing with the school but simply decided it wasn’t worth the money for what would have been a painting and drawing degree).
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
-While I was a student, I interned at Omaha’s most reputable branding agency, Oxide Design Co.
-I am currently a graphic designer at a top ad agency in Omaha
-Outside of my job at the ad agency, I freelance extensively
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Outside of school and work, I have been extremely active in pursuing my hobbies and goals:
-I’m a private pilot (flying has always been a passion of mine) and I earned my certificate in 2014 while still an undergrad.
-I teach drawing and violin at a local arts education nonprofit
-I play violin semi professionally
-I compose music (I’ve considered pursuing a degree in music as well)
-I have an ongoing, experimental screen printing project where I produce posters and print materials with a designer friend
-I participate in mentorship programming for student designers at my alma mater and have given lectures through their design department
As I said, I have a lot of interests outside of design, and I’m looking for a program that can support an eclectic approach to making with a highly experimental philosophy.
Any input is welcome!
