act: math 36

my cousins old bf was a math major and i don't think there were many jobs out there for him

i don't know how ACT really works or if you qualify, but if you want good math, MIT is awesome.

The other scores need to go up if you want to be competitive at top schools. This means something in the neighborhood of a 32 composite, which, given your math score, means about a 30 average on the other 3 sections.

And yes, you are advanced in math. But probably not enough to outweigh your other ACT sections & GPA - at least for a school like MIT.

Take the hardest courses you are able too, not just courses you think are advanced enough.

But yes, math alone won't get you into the top schools. Colleges will take a well rounded student with a demonstrated ability in math over a student who does excellent in math but weak in everything else. Go for the math, but don't ignore everything else.

Your grades and courses make you competetitive, but it's everything else that gets you in.

You will definitely be "advanced" in math, relatively speaking.

Although, if you really want to be advanced at math, you could show that you have creativity in the subject and have a passion for it through research...

Are you a Junior? Then sure. And it's always hard to say where you'll get accepted without info like ECs, etc. 6 APs is v good. I don't know much about the ACT, though, so I can't say much about the score.

Anyone can rush through classes, but can you earn A's in them. I would say you are advanced if you can easily obtain A's in all of those math classes.

For EC's, I am currently in 5 of them. I have stuck with them since freshman year. One is math club. One reason I do bad in english and reading is because English is my fourth language, and I learned to speak it properly in 4th grade. I saw people posting schools like M.I.T., and all I can say is that school is too much for me to handle. I prefer other schools. I checked out the top 10 by newsweekfor math, and here they are:
1. M.I.T
2.Harvard
3. Princeton
4. Stanford
5. U C Berkeley
6. U of Chicago
7. Yale
8. Cal Tech
9. Michigan Ann Arbor
10. Cornell

Do I have a chance at any of these schools listed?

It sounds like you're just working hard in math. I'm in Calc AB and I don't consider myself a genius at math or anything.

I'm sure I could take two math courses over the summer if I had no life.

So no, you're not incredibly advanced for doing that. Yes you are somewhat advanced, as are plenty of people. I guarantee you there is at least one person per school that's two years ahead in math.

many people could, but not many people do it because lots of people are lazy and don't want to go further in math, or they don't like math that much to go more advanced. I like it, and I am taking those classes. I will take a lot more than that before I go to college.

I would try for M.I.T. if I were you. Do not be intimidated just because it is "MIT." I am sorry for all of the rude people on this site. Too many people are always trying to correct others because they're trying to inflate their egos. I am not sure why people continue to do this, but those who do it are not that bright. :)

Anyways...Try to take the hardest math classes and aim for M.I.T.
I would also retake the ACT and study up on the other subject areas.

Good Luck.

thanks man. But, do I actually have a chance at MIT? The way people are posting things, it sounds like I might have a chance. I would have never thought of it.

Your a junior, right? If this is the case, work hard to raise your gpa to at least a 3.7 gpa (that is at LEAST! Aim much higher). Then, retake your ACTs. If you have a 36 on the math portion, I am pretty sure you have a shoe in. However, you have to improve the rest of your stats. Work really hard, it will pay off in the end.

You have a shot at M.I.T.--a very realisitc shot.

Thats cool. And, i am a junior. What should I raise my ACT to. I saw somewhere that I should raise it to a 32 but that is difficult. Does M.I.T. look at weighted or unweighted gpa. If it is weighted, then I have no problem. What about the other schools I listed in the top 10. Do I have a shot at any of those. THanks for all the help.

I've had some family members go there, some cousins and parents cousins. Does that help in any way for M.I.T.

bump. bump. 6 days left.

Honestly, MIT doesn't only accept advanced math students. Students are admitted only haveing done Precalculus.

MIT will probably be concerned about your english, reading, etc. scores. So, work hard and get the score....

But, MIT is not a school for the well rounded. The Ivy league is for the well rounded students. MIT wouldn't care if your english was bad, because you spoke several other languages first before english and make up for it by having amazing math skills or science skills.

They want the best people in each subject. If you are the best in a subject, they won't reject you for a guy who is good in that subject but is well rounded. They know that you will do well in that subject.
