Am I an Asian?!

Put other, yo. Asian is not a race you want to be when ur applying to colleges. Make sure they know ur Persian, because "asian" usually has a bad connotation among admissions officers

You're Asian.

They put all the major groups on that. Iranians, Pakistanis, Bengalis, Indians, ... are a pretty major group, they wouldn't make you put other.

put asian so you can be just as screwed as i will be for admissions

Dont worry too much about people who will try to scare you out of marking asian, its just the conventional wisdom of CC where everybody thinks that Asian=automatic reject. It's way overblown here.

Universities don't want an overwhelming proportion of One-sided math STUDENTS. and asians are disproportionately sheer math-oriented, they disproportionately take the hit for that. Now if only people on CC would notice that, its kind of a duh moment.

I am so confused now....

I think I will just put 'Other', the people who made the common app did a bad job in this section. Instead of only putting the countries that apply to each ethnic group, they put all of them..

If you think this is a bad idea please tell me, once again thanks for all the replies, Well Appreciated.

you are definately Asian, NOT Caucasian.

iran=middle east=asia.

now, from there you can decide what you want to do. If your name is not obviously Persian and you don't mention being Persian anywhere else on your application, you should probably leave it blank. Mentioning that you are Asian will work to your disadvantage in selective schools whether you say that you are Persian or not. Colleges will not really care which part of Asia you are from, being of Chinese background is just as much a disadvantage as being from a Persian background.

But I am sure you are Asian.

Do Jews count as Asian? Israel is, technically, in Asia. Most Jews have at least a little Israeli background, right?

I thought Judaism was a religion?

I have no idea what to do now, the answers are so balanced.. Is there somewhere I can contact Common App from ?

asian /* weeeeeee */

i believe the ethnicity box is optional on the commonapp...?

I'm not going to fill out the ethnicity group check box, hope it wont affect my admission. But I have put my Country of Birth, City and Languages etc... So I hope they will understand. Thanks for all your help everyone, someone just please tell me if they think this is a good idea. :)

I am half white and half Asian.... which box should I put ?

They're gonna find out from the city and country where you're from anyways.

mrx, I would check both boxes if I were you.

This whole race/ethnicity thing can get very convoluted.

Geography-wise, you are Asian, but as a person of Persian descent, you are also caucasian.

Other! That part of common app is not for you to fill out what others think you are, its for you to fill out what you think you are. If you don't consider yourself the "Asian" that they detail there, then put other and explain it in better detail.

It makes no sense to put Caucasian, even if the US census, for some bureacratic reason categorizes middle easterners as Asians. And it makes no sense to put yourself Asian if when someone asks you "what are you" you wouldn't say "I'm Asian", instead you would say "I'm Iranian" or "I'm Persian".

Hope that helps. Not sure why there is so much debate on this.

Uhh - no.

The US Census actually categorizes North Africans, Arabs, Persians, etc. as Caucasian or white.

According to the UC application, Middle Eastern is Caucasian. Beside "White/Caucasian" it has (includes Middle Eastern). I have a copy of last year's app in front of me.
There's also a box titled "Other Asian (not including Middle Eastern)", where you can specify another ethnic identity.
It seems pretty clear on the UC app anyway.

Common app is less specific. I'd put either Middle Eastern or Persian on the line beside the "Other, please specify" , or mark the Caucasian box if it were me, or even both. It says check all that apply.

Isn't Caucasian "Whites of European descent"?
