Am I an International Student?

Hi! I'm new to the college scene, and I have this doubt on whether I'm considered an international student or not.

I am a US Citizen, born and lived in Texas for 9 years, but I currently reside in Mexico and it's where I've done most of my studies. Currently coursing high school there.

Am I an International Student because my studies are in another country? If so, then I wont be eligible for the same aid like any other american citizen?

Typically an international student is someone who will need a special study visa to study in the US (F1). Since you’re a citizen, you wouldn’t need a visa and thus you wouldn’t be an international student.
HOWEVER some colleges consider “international applicants” for admission those who have studied in another country for a long time, since their examinations, classes, etc, are those of the foreign country where they studied; however in virtually all cases citizens are considered “citizens” for financial aid purposes. You’d need to check on the colleges’ websites.

And in the case of private scholarships given by the college itself, would I still be considered even though my studies aren’t in the US? Or does that depend on the college as well?

You will be eligible for aid just like any US students, but you will be evaluated in context with your peers in Mexico.

I see now. Thank you for your help!

You apply as a first year. Not int’l. I too am a us citizen living abroad. Only some universities evaluate you in context with people.from ur region such as cornell. Others evaluate with other americans.
