MY DREAM is to go to Duke University. I'm not a super genious, meaning I didn't get a 2400 on my SATs (I got a 1340 without writing). I take the hardest classes offered at my high school and have a 4.0 GPA (unweighted). As far as extracurricular activities go, I'm and active member in NHS, band, and French club, tennis, however, is the only sport I play. I also did a couple community service projects. If it counts for anything, I spent a year abroad in France as a Sophmore. I've taken many languages including French, Spanish, Latin, and I'm learning Hindi. I love music and am proficient at piano and violin, dabbling in composition.

Anyways, I was wondering if I had a hope of getting in? Hearing about all of the people on the site that have scored near perfect or perfect scores on the SAT had really disturbed me. I know Duke is a selective school and I am wondering if I have what it takes to stand out from the other 13,000+ applicants.

If I do have a chance, is it too much to hope that I might get the Angier B. Duke scholarship? The opportunites that the AB Duke scholarship provides really excite me. Somehow, anyhow I pray to get into Duke and be offered this scholarship!!

you have a pretty good chance.

School, very possible
Scholarship, unlikely

write good essays and present yourself well. You have a good shot.

College Confidential can come as a shock. Yes it is possible, but of course there are no guarantees. I hate to say it, but getting into top schools is nearly as much luck as it what you deserve. There are simply too many qualified people and not enough spots, plus things like affirmative action and the urge to get "token" students that fit a certain demographic.

Calm down, you have a very good chance of getting into Duke.

Admissions doesn't just look for academics, but they look at you as a person. Academic qualification is mostly a checkoff while they evaluate how well you'd fit in and contribute to the university.

It seems like you have a nice set of ECs and by your 4.0 unweighted GPA, it's likely that you're well qualified academically. You did take many AP/IB/Honors courses, right?

Some of those 2400'ers who don't get in are those overly competitive people with almost no personality, generic ECs that they are doing for nothing more than college, and pure study skills with little ability to succeed in the real world. I'd say you have a much better chance than those people.

I know a few kids who got the A.B. scholarship. You have to have done something truly incredible. But you'll definitely have the opportunity to do research, study abroad, etc, regardless. You just won't get the same stipend and scholarship without it.

Wow! I am really glad to hear that I actually might have a chance. Thank you all so much for your imput and actually taking the time to respond to me. All of you have made my day.

Thanks again!
