Am I considered a transfer or a freshman?

Hello,
I am an international student from Germany. I will start to study law at a German University in October this year. I plan to apply for the academic year 17/18 to some Universities in the Unites States. I was wondering if colleges are more likely to consider me as a freshman or a transfer? At the time of my application (Early Action: October or Regular Decision: January) I will have attended the University in Germany for only about 3 month. Furthermore, I know that one cannot study law as an undergraduate at an american college. Therefore, I would not be able to continue with my academic in the US anyway.

Thank you in advance!

You should contact the specific colleges/universities for accurate information about their own policies regarding freshman/transfer-student classifications.

That said, colleges in the U.S. generally will consider a student to be a transfer student if they have earned any college credit following graduation from a high school/gymnasium. Your university enrollment in Germany fits that category. If you plan to attend in the U.S. only as a one-year exchange student, the admissions process might differ from applying as a transfer student who seeks a U.S. degree.

Thank you!! I’ll do that! If I may ask another question: Do you know if it will be problem that I’ll study law in germany when this is not an option for undergraduate students who transfer to a college in the US?

One again, directly contact the U.S. colleges/universities in question about their own policies regarding the transfer of college credits they deem acceptable. I believe U.S. colleges are well aware that European universities differ from ours – so that is no problem. But do contact the specific college/university ahead of time to assess how much of your legal studies is transferable for credit here in the U.S…

Okey, thank you very much!

You will be a transfer b/c you have done university work, for credit, after finishing secondary school.
Whether or not you get credit (or advanced standing) for the work that you have done will depend entirely on the uni you go to.
