Hello everyone, new to the forums.
I am a Junior in high school.
I plan to become an artist nothing too specific but I would love to dive into fine arts, concept art and video game stuff, not programing.
My school, New Design cough cough isn't what I thought it would be when I applied. SOOOOOOOO i managed to take it upon myself and get into some art classes.
Next week I have drawing, painting and portfolio reveiws (making a portfolio).
I will be attending the national portfolio day event.

Problem with me is...
In life, i have ALWAYS DRAWN. Drawn mostly comic books and anime. I came into high school with the needy drive for anime. But now I am older and wiser, i feel like anime and comics are not for me, I would like something deeper.
Sadly, im the kind of person who is way too hard on herself, and i feel like im loosing my skill as an artist (sad face). And also I DONT HAVE ANYTHING THAT I CAN USE IN MY PORTFOLIO!!! I have like 2 sketch books (that arent filled) but they have no color, just sketches.
I dont feel like any college is going to take me, but I would love to come in strong, ANY ADVICE TO HELP ME PURSUE MY DREAM?!

Are you in the NYC?
If so
take Cooper Union’s free Saturday program. It just started, maybe still got openings?

There are loads of other programs if you can pay.
If you can’t, there are loads of free programs at museums and other foundations.
some of them are already started, but there might be still seat left. Do ask, you never know.

Hello, KateTheTerrorist, I am also a junior in high school and I know you are feeling. When I was in middle school most of my art was centered around anime and cartoons, however I slapped myself around for a bit as I entered high school and got rid of anime-styled art.

My advice to you is that you should start drawing and making new pieces right now! Since you are a junior you will still have plenty of time to make new artwork and beef up your skills/portfolio before the difficult stuff comes (senior year and college applications!).

As for the portfolio reviews, take what you have to the sessions. Show the people what you are currently working on and have them explain to you what you need to improve on, what you need in your portfolio, and other stuff like that. Be sure they actually inform you of these things. I had a mini-portfolio review today and my reviewer just gave small superficial compliments and no critique.

Good luck!!
