I study in an igcse curriculum so can i join any university after my AS levels which is 12th grade??
I study in Dubai and want to know about the procedures for applying and also if i can get any scholarships? I do get A*s accross most of my subjects. Also, I want to either do Aeronautical engineering or Biomedical Engineering, so can u suggest some good colleges (not only ivy league but which are good for these courses and also truly give good education).
Thank You
There are two types of financial aid/scholarship: need based financial aid and ‘merit’ scholarships. Admissions decisions at most US universities are ‘need aware’- that is, the admissions office considers whether you need financial aid in deciding whether or not to accept you.
Scholarships are pretty much always based on test scores. There are some universities that provide substantial scholarships for any students- international or domestic- who achieve certain SAT scores (University of Alabama is a CC favorite, but there are others). Once you have taken some standardized tests, there are a lot of people here who can suggest good universities for automatic scholarships.
As far as engineering goes, here is a list to get you started. Note how many of the top schools are not “Ivy League” or similar- the state universities are some of the strongest programs.
Are you intending to work in US after graduation?
You need to apply AFTER you get your AS results, during the year for A Levels. Few universities accept ugcse/as only.
Thank you so much, i agree with you on the ivy league schools.
Ya, I intend to work in the states.
If you want to work in the US (and you know just how hard that is, right?) don’t go into aeronautical engineering. That’s a field where most workers are required to be citizens and obtain stringent security clearances. A Dubai national on an extended student visa (or temporary worker visa) has zero chances of working in this business, probably even as a janitor!
I agree with katliamom; it’ll be difficult for you to find employment in the US in the fields or aeronautical or aerospace engineering unless you are a US citizen and possess a security clearance (which you cannot apply for yourself).
Okay thanks,
Is it that bad for aeronautical engineers??
So do you suggest biomedical engineering over aeronautical for job prospects??
Nooooo. BME will require that you go to grad school to be competitive for jobs.
“Is it that bad for aeronautical engineers?”
Yes. In fact, since recent security breaches and hacks, it’s gotten tougher. My brother is an executive for an aerospace company and has to renew his security clearance every year (it used to be every 3 years) including an annual polygraph test. He tells me, his company doesn’t even look at CVs from non-citizens. It’s gotten even harder for naturalized citizens to get these jobs.
If you wish to work in the US in aeronautical/aerospace, I suggest applying for US citizenship.
^^ which of course isn’t very easy, lol.
Citizenship is not that easy to get either, and that won’t make getting a security clearance any easier, if anything it would be tougher. I’ve been interviewed for a security clearance on behalf of an acquaintance I barely knew. It is a long and tough process and there are no guarantees.
Find a major that makes you employable in your country first. If not, you could be stuck.
It seems like you have little knowledge about how job prospectives for international students are in the US right now.
It is increasingly getting difficult to get jobs after the undergrad, and unless you get job offers from some companies during the undergrad, there is a slim chance to find company who will sponsor your H-1B visa. It’s even harder in oversupplied fields like biology. Also, recently they removed OPT extension for engineering students. Also, to add what bodangles said, BME is not a good choice (for now, at least) because it is a relatively new field, and you won’t have many opportunities.
You have three choices: Go back to your country after the undergrad, go to grad in US and get better chances of getting jobs with masters/PhD, or try to find companies to sponsor you.
For citizenship, it is MUCH easier to get one through your immediate family members. You need green card first, and getting that will be quite difficult too
aha Thx alot guys
