Am I feasible for USD?

Hey all, I'm currently a freshman at CSU in Colorado. I am looking to transfer to University of San Diego for a music composition degree, but don't know if my grades are considered up to par.

Psychology - A+
Biology - C
Italian - A-
Intro to Health and Exercise Science - A (does not use +/-)
Health and Wellness - C (79.7.... No +/-)

I know USD is a catholic university, and I emphasized in my application that my faith is a big part of who I am. I also did over 100 hours of community service on high school, had a little over a 3.4 gpa, and was part of my campus ministry. Even tho I currently only have a 3.02 gpa for my first college semester, how are my chances of getting in? I had a solid professor evaluation and essay too (in my opinion). Does it help at all that my low grades are in science when I want to pursue a music degree?

Thanks on advance for all your help.

I also had a 29 composite ACT score (34 in English)

Try to bring up your gpa to 3.2, and I believe USD requires an audition for all music majors?

They do not hold auditions unfortunately, so it seems I have to get in first solely on grades and EC’s  will they look at my grades for next semester if they need to??

What were your HS grades?

My high school gpa was about a 3.45 unweighted, with a 29 composite ACT score

You should definitely try to bring your GPA up next semester.

Nice, another USD transfer (those be rare around here). I myself am a freshman attempting to transfer to USD as a sophomore. Unlike you, however, my high school grades were poop. I have a 3.6 now after 17 units and hope to get a 3.8 after my second semesters 19 units. I remember reading that to be “competitive” for admissions you should complete college algebra and get a high grade in English composition while maintaining a 3.0 or higher for 24 units. Best of luck to you!

Edit: Also, make sure your classes transfer and that none of your classes are online.

Is it okay if I tested out of and got credits for college algebra already? Or should I take it anyways

Well, I also placed higher in math and ended up taking statistics (which requires college algebra as a requirement). I emailed the transfer counselor of USD (If you have any questions you should email him, his contact information is on the USD website) and he said my statistics class may count as CREDIT but will NOT fulfill USD’s undergraduate math requirement. In other words, any level besides college algebra may receive (3-4 credits that apply for transfer) but you will have to take college algebra at USD eventually to graduate. So you can either take college algebra now and then transfer or just take it when you (hopefully) transfer to USD. I myself am going to take it when i transfer to USD because I already chose my classes for next semester. Best of luck!

Why aren’t you taking first year music theory and other music fundamentals like applied music (private lessons). Your grades are iffy, but the lack of any music classes for someone trying to transfer into musuc is an even bigger problem. You haven’t proven interest or aptitude yet in music–that will be a problem for transfer admissions at many places.

Since this is my first semester, I was not planning on doing Music so I became a science major. And unfortunately at my school, you are not allowed to take ANY music whatsoever unless you are a music major or minor. To make things worse, you can only become a music major/minor through auditions at the beginning of the year. To make things even more worse, they only offer their first year music theory classes during fall semester, and even though I believe I am at the Music Theory II level classes, they have pre-requisites.

As for private lessons, I have been taking private music theory and instrument lessons for the last six years, which I explained on my Common App.
