I am a student that is in-state and am a part of the Commonwealth Governor School. It is basically like IB, but in my opinion it has a bit more difficulty to it. I have a weighted gpa of 4.45 and am currently ranked 5th out of a class of 441. I have a numerous amount of extra currircular activites and summer activites. A lot of my ECs, volunteer activities, and summer camps relate to medicine because I ultimately want to be a doctor. I was a member of the 2010 VA Boys State, which is something that colleges like to see. My SAT, however, is the only thing thats drawing me back. I have a total score of 1810 with a 570 in reading and 640 in math. I know its absolutely horrible and I am definetly not proud of myself but it was the best I could do. I also heard UVa is one of the leading colleges in taking consideration of the full application and not just focus on the SAT score.

I am posting this because my level of concern became higher when I didn't get the "likely" letter that UVa sent out to some of the applicants. About 3 kids in my school got it.

Be completely honest with me, I don't want to have my hopes high when my application is actually weak. UVa is my top choice, but i already got into the scholars program at the University of Maryland and plan to go there if I don't get into UVa.

I have a good friend who’s daughter is now a freshman at UVA --she graduated from TJ and her SAT scores were similar to yours. Actually your gpa is higher --hers was a 4.2w. Rumor has it that UVA places the most important factor of admissions on gpa/academic rigor/EC"s. SAT scores are not as crucial a factor in their decision, although I believe their avg. incoming score is around a 1900 (?). I could be wrong. Put in your info. into college data dot com -it’s been suprisingly accurate so far for my S’s admissions. Good luck! I know, this waiting is SO HARD. I hope you get in!

Only a small percentage of accepted applicants have received the likely letter. No matter what happens, be glad you have a great second choice.

Thank you guys so much. As it gets closer to the April 1st deadline, it gets worrisome. And I am very glad that I have UMd as my 2nd choice because it truly is a great school. However, UVa has been my dream school since birth pretty much and it would just make me very proud that all the work I have done paid off in getting me into my dream school.

I wish you good luck but realize that admissions at U VA are extremely selective and while you may be qualified there are so many other students vying for admissions its a numbers game. I have heard that if you are from Northern VA it is particularly difficult. If you are from a more rural area, your chances increase.

Recommendations carry more weight than SATs. Look at section C7 here: [Common Data Set: Institutional Assessment and Studies, University of Virginia](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/datacatalog/cds/admission.shtm) Your GPA is alittle above the 25%ile (section c9). Based on your rank and GPA I would say you have a good chance

My son is in state (Fairfax County) and attends UVA and your stats compare favorably with his and many of his friends there. I would be quite shocked if you do not get in.

flash, if you haven’t gone to the UVA forum on CC (under “Colleges and Universities” and then “alphabetical list of colleges” link) it might be of some help to you. There is an admissions officer, Dean J, who is really a great resource and graciously finds time to post on cc’s forum. There also is her blog link below that contains a lot of information on the admissions process:

I hope you get in; you sound like a wonderful addition to this year’s incoming class! SAT scores aren’t everything and fortunately UVA seems to look at the students’ “whole body of work”. You look to have a great academic record and I wish you all the best. As you said, though, even if you are denied you have a great school in UMD, but I hope you get to say “Wahoowa” instead of “Fear the Turtle” come April! :)

My level of concern is starting to go down, and I’m looking forward to April 1st! Regardless of if I get in or not I know I worked extremely hard these past 4 years, and I’ll be happy wherever I go. Thanks for all the help once again!

You are a match for UVirginia. Good luck.
