Am I going to be alright?

Hey. I would appreciate it if you could roughly chance me for some schools, and let me know what I need to work on for me to do decently during college time later this year.

I’m a junior at a large public school that has a lot of trouble, so my rank should be alright…at LEAST top 10% if not better. My cumulative GPA is approx 3.5, and my junior year GPA is a bit higher with a 3.6-ish and I really should be able to get to a 3.7 at least before the end of the year. I didn’t get my SAT scores back yet, and I think I did significantly better on the SAT than PSAT, but I got a 1280 on the PSAT w a 700 in reading and a 580 in math. I think math score did rise, I was 99th percentile for reading which was cool. Math is my weakest spot, I’ve gotten Cs ans Ds in math a couple times in the past two years in math and a f one marking period last year. Bad, I know!! I’m trying really hard to make that better, and I’ve gotten Cs in pre calc both semesters but I’m really working for a B this marking period. I have 2 APs w A averages in both, and I had an A+ in AP world last year, but only got a 3 on the test.

My ECs are pretty good but there’s not too many of them. I’m on my school’s mock trial team as a star witness both years, I score 9s and 10s exclusively and I will probably touch on that a lot in my essays. We made it to 8 in the state- there’s like 72 teams so that’s not too bad.

Then I participate in LifeSmarts, a business/environment/tech quizbowl sort of thing. Last year I was a team member, we made it to nationals in Seattle. This year I’m captain and we are going to nationals in denver. This will be by far what I talk about the most if given the opportunity. Its afforded me a lot of great opportunities

Stock market game, writer for school newspaper. Summer after fresman year did a free academy with the editor of a large paper in my state and ended up getting my full story published in it, which was great.

I should have a little under 100 hrs of community service at nusing homes and community events by the time I apply.

Im a biracial (white+black) female student, first generation college student. Idk what my income bracket will be, my dad makes maybe <$45k, but he’s getting married later this year most likely and my soon to be stepmother probably makes <$25k? I’m not sure how the taxes will work out, they won’t be married before August…but whatever

Schools I’m looking at: I’m from CT so new England and general East coast is ideal, pls rec schools if you can tho!!

UHart
UNew Haven
UMass
Ithaca (my cousin went here and loved it)
Temple
Howard
The New School (bad financial aid here but I visited and loved it)
Pace
Uni of Maryland
Brooklyn College
Pratt Institute

Idk what else, if there’s any suggestions I’d appreciate it so much! There’s so many schools out there its overwhelming. I just want as much aid as possible in a town or city that ISNT completely dead. Thank you so much for reading this, sorry it’s so long!!

Also. I think my recs will be great as well as my essay, writing is my strong suit. I either want to go to school for journalism, teaching, or political science.

To answer your primary question: yes, you are going to be alright!

I have no clue what colleges/universities to recommend to you, and I’m only vaguely acquainted with those currently on your list. However, Temple is one of my top choices right now–they offer merit aid for stats!

Your reading score is exceptional. I would try to get your math up to at least the mid 600s, just so you look more well rounded. Do your best to maintain a high GPA. Is your current GPA weighted?

Uni’s like to see EC’s that demonstrate strength in your future career field. It looks like you already have some EC’s of that flavor, so you should be okay.

Nailing the essay is definitely important. Don’t just bring your best writing to the table; truly look for a way to talk about yourself in a compelling, innovative manner.

Keep working hard! There should be others on here that can offer more specific advice as to which institutions you have a chance at, and which should be added to/removed from your list.

Hey, thank you so much for applying! I’m actually not sure how exact my GPA is, my school has a QPR rating which I think roughly translates to a weighted GPA? I’m not positive. I really messed up freshman and sophomore year so I’ve been trying to clean that mess up this year lol. And thank you for the comment about my PSAT! yeah, I’m reallyyyy hoping my math score was better on the actual SAT.

Again, thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful response! I hope you have a great day/night, and good luck in your admissions process!

Bump  also, I somehow forgot to add that I’m the editor in chief and founder of a teen art and writing magazine with a smal-medium following!!
