Am I likely to get into Cornell, UCLA, USC?

Let me give you guys a list of schools I've applied to (Ranked, in my opinion, of hardest to get into)

Top- Cornell, UCLA, USC

Please let me know your ideas for my chances at any or all of the schools listed. Thanks!!
PS- My grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-uncle went to Cornell

Despite your relatives having been went to Cornell, your stats are not that appealing. I also wouldn't consider UCI a safety, as it is getting even harder to get in.
What is your UC GPA?

Cornell - reach
UCLA - reach
USc - reach
UCSD - low reach to match
pepperdine - match?
Occi - match?

I think my UC gpa would be 3.94
What specifically do you mean by "not appealing"?

sb and irvine are not safeties for you. Your top choices will be high reaches.

Maybe I am thinking of a "safety" alittle differently. I do not mean that UCI and UCSB are guarantees. But you do not think it is reasonable to say that i have a good chance of getting into at least UCI? I am above their middle 50% for both reading and writing SAT.

PS- Alittle more info, just in case any of this matters:
I go to a private school
My mom works at UCSD (they asked this on the app)
Both my parents went to University of San Diego

My UC and common app essay explained how my dad's unstable job situation has actually brought the family closer together, and the other essay explained how I am proud that I run my own fashion website.

don't listen to them.
I will be amazed if you don't get into UCI, UCSB, and SDSU.
UCSD and Occidental are reaches (bad test scores are overshadowed by great grades (a good thing!), But I would also be surprised if you don't get in to at least one.
USC is a slightly higher reach- 30-40% chance of getting in I think
UCLA and Cornell are high reaches for everyone....but I doubt you will get into either with your test scores (sorry!)
I don't know anything about pepperdine except that its campus is amazing..haha sorry

but yeah, you should get into most of the colleges on your list except the top ones.
if worse comes to worse, go to a comm. college and transfer to UCLA (I know a lot of bright kids doing this- its cheaper and gets rid of all the boring G.E.s before college!)

good luck though!

Thanks for your comments, ineo42!

Cornell-Big Reach
UCLA-Reach
USC-Good Chance
UCSB-Good Chance
UCSD-low Reach
UCI-Good Chance
Pepperdine-Good Chance
Occi-Never heard of that university, so I wouldn't know
if you will have a good chance or not.

your tops are all major major reaches. i'd say you have a pretty decent shot with any of the others though, especially cause your a CA resident. good luck.

also, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/643028-my-chances.html

Hmm... here is my two cents:

Cornell: Like 20% chance (higher because have legacies)
UCLA: 20%
USC: 25%
UCSB: 50%
UCSD: 50%
UCI: 85%
Pepperdine???
Occi???

Safeties usually mean that you are guaranteed in. You have a great chance at irvine and SB, but there is still a chance you won't get in.

Your mother works at UCSD, both your parents went to UCSD, you have a great shot at UCSD, now that you mention it.

thanks, anyone else?

This thread should be flagged for one of the most filled with misinformation.

Let's start with the average GPA and SAT for UCSB. GPA: 4.03 UC weighted. SAT: 1870. Calling this or Irvine a safety in a year when they have cut the number of freshmen they are accepting is misinformed. They are matches meaning it's probaby about 50/50.

Then the OP tells us her parents went to USD and posters tell her she's into UCSD. Even if they went to UCSD it would be important to understand that UCs give no legacy preference.

Think hard about why you are interested in Pepperdine, and what was reflected in your essays. Pepperdine's academic stats are misleading; the truth is reflected in the admission rate. They are looking for something besides the numbers.

BTW; My D applied to and visited Pep and Oxy.They are very different, but seem like great choices for the right student.
