Well, I'm taking ucsd with the full ride and jacobs eng scholarship perks with hopes of doing real well at ucsd and getting into business school or a md/mba prog after. Chose this mostly because of money, itd be a strain on my family paying over 50k a year after including travel, etc. We'd have to use our house on collateral with taking out tons of loans and then interest, etc. I dunno, I guess i'm just posting to look for assurance that its not too unfeasible to go from ucsd bioeng to business school without too much work experience. My highest goal as of now is to make money, am i making a mistake turning down M&T?

M&T is the best recruited undergrad program at Penn. And that is saying quite a lot.

I know nothing about USCD, but a full ride is hard to pass up. However, so is M&T.

Did Penn give you no financial aid?

It's a reasonable decision. If you got into M&T at Penn then you can be successful anywhere. Best of luck next year.

Excellent...you have just saved $200,000+++all that loan interest. I am in similiar position and went with being debt free. I feel this will give me many more options in the future.

He saved that much, but what was the future income loss for not going with M&T?

There are no guarantees that he will make a signifigant amount more in income. $200,000+..... this is after tax disposable income. he would have to make a hell of alot more money for a long time to realize this when he is employed.

he made a good decision.

Stupid ass. Why the hell did you apply there in the first place than. NERD.

Salary at USCD grads. Technology has a quite high salary, but most likely does not have businesses as high as the bonuses.

MnT has a similar average to technology USCD people, but the numbers do not show bonus, which could easily amount to just as much as the regular salary.

Jokr, I'm guessing that you got rejected by M&T. Accept that he was better than you and move on.

Well, as snipan said, MnT is the best recruited program by business firms at probably any school. Ibanking is nearly guarenteed and if you could really get through MnT, you might be hitting Assoicate at an Ibank after two years, which pays 6 digits.

On the other hand, if you take the MBA route, you'll have need at least 2-4 years of work experience to be admitted. Once admitted, a top MBA program is very expensive (60k/year), and last another two years.

But money now is better than money later (who doesn't know that?). So I think you'll do very well. Good Luck at UCSD. Remember that there is no suck thing as a mistake in your case.

Cornell baby.

OK......Let me start out by saying: YOU'VE MADE A HUGE MISTAKE.

Think about it: it's a comparison between Wharton and UCSD. WHARTON!!!!! #1 in business!!!! Wharton kicks UCSD's butt and has the latter running away crying to mommy Berkeley. And then Wharton will kick Berkeley's butt too, and then the latter will run away crying to daddy Stanford. Then Wharton will kick Stanford's butt too. And west coast colleges will NEVER even make an attempt to compete with Wharton.

I would have chosen Wharton over UCSD in less than a heartbeat but that's just my opinion.

IhateCa, I don't think it is worth paying $200,000 for Wharton when you can get UCSD for $0.00, unless you are 100% intent on working for an IB or MC. The OP's family isn't very wealthy, so I think his decision was the right one.

I would take the weather, ladies, and surrounding city of UCSD over Wharton any day (especially if college is free!), but that's just me....

Double major in Econ (top 15 department nationally) and Math (top 25 department nationally) at UCSD, maintain a high GPA (over 3.6) and good things will happen.

I AM 200% intent on working for an IB or MC.....that's why I'd pay extra to go to Wharton over UCSD...and I'm sick and tired of the west coast.

IhateCA, I very much doubt that it is you who will pay for that education. It is your parents who are going to have to pay. If your family is very wealthy, forking out $50,000/year is not too much of a stretch. But for middle income families, especially those with more than 2 children, spending $200,000 on one child's education is crazy, especially if the alternative is a top 15 Econ (UCSD) department for free.

My mom agrees with me that should I choose Wharton over UCSD (Heck, NYU STERN over UCSD-that's because NYU Stern, which is an absolutely amazing school, kicks UCSD's butt in business-heck UCSD doesn't even HAVE business-and New York always beats San Diego) it's ABSOLUTELY worth it and that she (and my dad) will pay for every cent of it, minus whatever financial aid we get (even if we get $0 aid). And Frankly, I agree with her.

Wharton and NYU Stern ARE worth the premium over UCSD.

I would say we're middle class.

If you are middle income, chances are, you won't get a penny from NYU or Penn. If your family thinks it is worth paying $200,000 extra for an education, that's cool. But I can understand why the OP did not feel comfortable putting his family through the financial burden.
