Am I nuts if I pick Fordham over Georgetown?

I am probably deciding between the two schools. I was accepted to both. I am getting 30,000/year from Fordham and pretty much nothing from Georgetown. I also have close to 100k in a college account though for either school, so that will help.

At either school I'd probably try to switch to its business school (I was accepted to arts and sciences at both)...and i hopefully plan to go to Stern for graduate school (I was accepted there for undergraduate but not sure I'm loving it)

I live in Long Island, NY and am not sure I want to venture out to DC. I'd still dorm at Fordham but I like the comfort of being pretty close to home, and i have some friends from HS also going to the city.

Everyone is telling me Georgetown, Georgetown, Georgetown, how superior it is to Fordham (I know it is, but how much really?) and forget about the money for now.

I have always said I want a school with wow factor and much prestige, like Georgetown has, and I'm afraid Fordham doesn't.

I love both campuses so it's not that, it's really just I don't know if I want to leave home by so far. Plus I have the money at Fordham.

Basically, how crazy of me would it be to skip the glorious Georgetown education I can get for Fordham?

Thanks

Not crazy at all. Yes, Georgetown is ranked higher, but there is so much more to an education than just the rankings. It sounds like you have thought this through but challenge yourself on the distance component. Part of college growth for many students is going outside of your comfort zone and being in a completely different part of the country. Georgetown really is in the center of lots of activity.

However, if you really are sure the “fit” is better at Fordham, it is ultimately your experience and how well you do that will help you be successful in life.

I won’t comment on Georgetown vs. Fordham as colleges or the difference in cost, but DC isn’t exactly 3,000 miles away from Long Island. Once you start college, the odds are very high that you’ll have very little contact with your high school friends attending other high schools in the City. You’ll probably just seem them during vacations in much the same way as if you attended Georgetown.

So again, if you prefer Fordham to Georgetown or if the $ difference is important, fine, choose Fordham. But don’t choose it because you’re afraid to go to DC.
