Apollo, do you think the MIT women’s program will be ridiculously hard for me to get into? Is it super competitve?

I meant affirmative action, not african Americans, meaning that you will be given preference because you are such a sought after minority.

I would also recommend that you apply to MITES for the summer between your junior and senior year, as well as a few research internships.

What are you planning to do this coming summer? There are lots of great opportunities. PM me if you would like me to help you find some

I think you are right on track, but you should bolster your EC’s just a little. I agree that outside of school activities can be helpful, and also try to get some leadership in on-campus clubs.

Great advice, Always Leah. This summer I’m going to be taking calculus at a local community college to get a bit more ahead, so that would prevent me from doing any internships that are over night or anything, but I definitely want to apply to MITES also next winter. Will being NA make give me a fighting chance for this program or will it still be extremely hard to get into regardless?

But if I could find a summer activity that I could just do during the day that would be great, if you had any suggestions.

MITES is specifically designed for minorities, and it is extremely competitive, so there are no guarantees but you would definitely have a chance!

As for this summer, do you live close to a university? If so, contact some professors and see if they will let you do some kind of research in their lab. Or if you’re interested in medicine you could look into volunteering at a local hospital. That sort of thing.

Alizabeth, could you reply to my private message?

You’re on the right track, but step it up a notch your junior year for the APs, SATs and ECs.

You seem ok so far, but remember, while being a minority and a first generation, MIT is at the caliber where you could also have a 4.0 and 2250+ on the sat and still reject you without a thought. Step up your EC’s, and get involved! Are you taking calc 1 or 2 this summer? I’m also a sophomore taking calculus (currently). Good luck :)

AA = Affirmative Action, not African-American.

I’m aware. somebody above me brought up something about African Americans regarding her comment so I was replying to that.

^ That was me. I was wondering if there was any specific data with regard to admit rates of NA. Alwaysleah ( and dblazer, and Psychoanylyze) made it sound like there was some objective data. In 4 years, I have heard lots of rumor and innuendo, repeated as fact, but not much concrete. I offered up the closest data point I was aware of. Not an admit rate, because I have no denominator. Just the actual number of black kids admitted to MIT. So even if every black kid that applied was admitted, it is still quite a small percentage of black seniors. Not sure what to make of it.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. So do you think that almost every NA that applies will be accepted if they have semi good grades/test scores/ec’s?
