Am I pretty much screwed when it comes to registering for classes??

I just got accepted last Friday, even though I sent my app for transfer in months ago.

I called admissions to see how I can register because I found out that freshmen are starting to register now.

They directed me over to First Year Experience and then I talked to someone there...

The girl told me that I had to attend orientation before I could register for classes.

The catch is, all the orientation slots are full and I won't be able to attend an orientation until around the 12th of August.

I am seriously about to explode. I NEED to get into CSCI-C 211 because I'm switching majors and if I don't, that screws up my whole plan to graduate in 2.5-3 years.

Will I be able to get into at least that class?

I am so frustrated right now that I can't even concentrate for my summer classes. I don't want to end up taking classes that I don't have to take for my major or minor, that's just stupid and wasteful.

During orientation you will meet with an advisor. You will be able to discuss your 2.5-3 year plan at that time. No guarantees, but they can sometimes pull strings when need be to get you a spot if a class is officially closed.

Do you have access yet to the registration website that shows how many seats are left in each class section? Check it out. You might be worrying needlessly. But be prepared to take classes at non-preferred times. Good time slots go fast.

My S took C211 last fall as a high school senior. He did not register until the end of August, after HS had started. He was initially on the wait list, but he did get in within the first week of classes starting.

You’ll definitely get in. Even if the wait list, I saw a lot of people drop the first week.

Is it best to not have anxiety attacks over this and wait until I meet with my advisor at orientation?

I mean isn’t it my job to tell the advisor I want to major in computer science and complete a degree in 2.5-3 years and then he/she makes it work out?

Chill the heck out, all you’re doing is creating more worry in your head which fuels more worry and more worry. Breathe.

No, it’s not their job to make it work out. The only way advisors will ‘make it work’ is if they’re your major advisors and if you need 1 class to graduate, and even then it’s not always a sure thing. People drop classes like crazy the first week, so $5 says you’ll end up even if you’re lower on the waitlist. In addition, professors will often let in the entire waitlist if there’s room in the class. Just be prepared to be taking classes at 8 am or other strange times, as those are definitely what will be left open

What do you mean by make it work? Your advisor will suggest classes for you to take to complete your degree, yes. And I’m sure you’ll be fine with C211. On average 10-20 students take W’s, do you can expect people to drop the first few days as well

Your academic advisor will outline the classes that you should take in the upcoming semester that are major specific, as well as explore elective options and back-up options with you. He or she will not schedule any of your classes for you though, and I do not know how much power he or she has with regards to helping students get in classes that are full.

When you sign up for classes though, you can see exactly how many people are on the waitlist for every offering of every class (if applicable). This will at least allow you a decent opportunity at getting into a class that is full.

You should be fine, Vesper123
