My first semester at UT, EE Major: My engineering classes were really difficult. Coming from a high school where I didn't really study much, I struggled. My overall gpa ended up being a 3.0, which I am ok with, but my engineering gpa is a 1.83. I made a C on one and C- on the other. Computing was difficult as always and Intro to EE was apparently made more challenging by the department (according to my professor). Anyways, I am on engineering probation now, meaning if I don't get that 1.83 up to a 2 after two more semesters I am kicked out of the engineering school. I have one EE class next semester and one in the fall, both of which seem even harder.

So....am I screwed? I feel that I can't get any scholarships or internships with an 1.83, assuming people ask for major specific gpa (do they?) Or am I panicking too early? It's only been one semester I guess.

Don’t freak out. So you bombed the first semester. Who said it was gonna be a cakewalk, huh? Happens to a lot of people.

I’ve had a few friends to whom this has happened to and they were all able to bring their grade point averages up to par in the following semester.

Brace yourself for those EE classes that are coming. Take it as your second chance to set things right and try your hardest to stay on top of things. Tutoring, TA’s, office hours, asking friends for help, etc. Now that you’ve taken the intro class, you know specific areas or chapters from the book that gave you hard time so make sure you get that down so your next classes go smoother.

Consider taking an elective if you haven’t already to help your overall gpa. It’s not a sin to take a gpa booster! For mine I took Intro to Theater and it was fairly easy.
