I was recently accepted to Uconn (2-3 weeks ago) as a transfer for the 2010 Fall semester, but I'm not sure whether or not I will be getting aid.

I filled out the FAFSA for the school I attend now (WCSU) before the deadline, but I did not add Uconn as one of the schools to receive my application because I didn't know if I was going to be accepted or rejected.

I called the Uconn financial aid office and they told me I am possibly still eligible for financial aid, but I most likely won't receive any grants due to it being sent in past their deadline.

Is it worth going if I have to take out a substantial amount of private loans just to satisfy one semester's tuition & room/board fees? What should I do if I don't get any aid?

File the financial aid stuff at UConn tonight. Tomorrow, call the admissions department and ask - if you don’t get any aid, can your admission be deferred until next year? If it can, would you be allowed to continue at your current school (only consider this option if you can continue to earn enough credits that will transfer so that you don’t delay your graduation). If you can’t stay at your current school, could you work for a year and then go back?
Taking out large loans isn’t advisable - plus will it be for one semester or is the aid all allocated by school year?

They told me they already have my financial aid application on file (which is strange since I did not have them as one of the schools to receive it on my app.), but it was received after I was accepted (after March 1st). I won’t know anything for another three weeks, when the packages are out.

I’ll ask this. Fortunately, there are some classes I can still take at my current Uni that would count towards the degree I’m pursuing (engineering).

I believe the loans are all allocated by school year. I’m pretty sure that if I do get any awards, they’ll be loans. The COA at Uconn is 21k per year (in-state student here). I don’t feel comfortable taking out that much money for one school year.

Okay so I checked the Uconn website and this is what I found:

"Deferred enrollment is designed for students who desire to attend the University of Connecticut but, for various reasons, wish to postpone their enrollment. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions offers a one year deferred enrollment to students who have applied to the University, been accepted as freshmen and have paid the $150 acceptance fee.

An approved deferral guarantees your admission for either of the subsequent two academic semesters. Under no circumstances, during the deferred period, will the deferred student be allowed to enroll at another institution as a full-time or part-time student and earn 12 or more credits. If the student does enroll in 12 or more credits at another institution, the deferred admission will be void.

International students and transfer students are not eligible for deferred enrollment."

Now I am really worried. I can’t continue at my current university much longer because there are very few courses available that are relevant to my intended major. What do I do? Take out the necessary loans anyway? Apply again within a year?
