Am I settling?

I graduated hs in 2005 and spent a semester at a 4 year college and got a 1.69. I have been in CC for the past 5 semesters and have earned a 3.96 GPA there.

I have been accepted to UMCP for econ. My question is am i settling on my choice to attend Maryland? Could i get in to a better college and take another semester and apply elsewhere?

UVA, Michigan are places i was looking to apply. Econ, finance

You could definitely shoot a bit higher with that GPA.

Where did you go when you pulled that 1.69?

you should definitely at least try to go higher. It’s going to depend on the specific admissions committee how much your 1.69 is going to get weighed but after 5 semesters of a 3.96, it should be mostly forgiven. Worst case, they reject you and you go to UMCP, a fine institution.

Simple answer: you can likely get into higher ranked school.

Yes, you could have probably gotten into Michigan, maybe UVA, and lots of other great schools- but the question is do you want to go to Maryland? It’s a good school, so if you think you would do well there and you like the school, you should go.

i went to va wesleyan when i got the 1.69. thank you all very much. i went there unfocused and came home and worked. Honestly, maryland seemed like a nice school, but i just want to go to a better school and wasn’t sure if i would be able to get accepted…

Honestly, I don’t know how you pulled a 1.69 at VA Weslayan. It’s not even on par with UMD. I know kids who go to UMD; they never go to class and still manage 3.0+.

With that being said, Mich and VA feed a lot of transfers from a lot of their respective community colleges. It would have been harder for you, coming from OOS, than their raw transfer %'s would seem to admit.

Go to UMD and do well. UMD has a great graduate econ department and is minutes away from DC. You’re very lucky to have done well in CC after your abysmal initial foray into college. Congratulations on your efforts and good luck wherever you go.
