The counselor told me to enroll in three classes, but I wanted to take more so I enrolled in one more class. As of now I have 18 units. Do you guys think it is too much ?

Here are my classes
-chem 20A with Baugh
-Math 31B with Radko
-Eng Comp3 with Frankel
-Philosophy 6 with Almog

If you are a freshman, which I presume you are…“good night sweet prince.” 18 units for your first quarter is a lot considering the max for the letters of science is 19. The most I’ve ever taken is 17. Plus you have BAUGH. I’m sure you’ve read the reviews…everyone who has had Baugh hated him. Im pretty sure that even the kids that got 98% on his midterms hated his class. Philosophy may be difficult. 31B and Eng Comp3 are not bad. But when you put it all together, it just seems like a really hard first quarter.

I’m in the same boat as your oatzamak. I’m a biochem major and my adviser recommended to only take three classes.

As of now these are my classes (19 units):
-Chem 20A
-Math 31A
-GE Cluster (Interracial Dynamics)
-Eng Comp3

I feel that just taking chem, math, and english is enough but that GE cluster is something I want to take advantage of.

Since I am a freshman I can’t help you much. All I can say is that try out the classes the first two weeks. Before it hits the friday of the second week, drop the classes you can’t handle. I heard that classes are only temporary up till the second week.

Yeah you can drop if you feel it will be too hard.

@Ehmeel: your schedule seems pretty difficult too. Not in the difficulty of the material but workload wise. Your schedule is almost exactly like my first quarter schedule minus the eng comp 3 and sub interracial dynamics for never-ending stories (Biochem major too). If it gets too hard, you can try to push eng comp3 back a quarter, but there is no guarantee that you will get the class. I’m pretty sure you just have to finish the writing I requirement before spring quarter because the seminar counts as the writing II class.

@brosiedon: Yeah I feel like the material may be easy but the workload…Ugh. Plus I’m looking for work study and planning on participating in some extra-curriculars my first quarter…I’m doubting if I can handle it…The thing that I am worried about most is that I won’t be able to get eng comp 3 over with. My adviser said that I need to have the writing I requirement completed before spring quarter because Im gonna take a class that requires it completed to finish the writing II requirement.

I would drop Eng Comp 3 right now but Im hesitating because I dont want to take the chance of not getting the class winter quarter…what do you think?

@Ehmeel: yeah that’s what I was saying. You will need that writing I requirement fulfilled to take the seminar for the ge cluster. And it would definitely be risky to drop it now and try to get it next quarter. So see how your schedule is, if it’s too much drop math or chem (I know that seems like a bad thing to do, but you have to assess the situation and if you drop comp 3 your chances of getting it winter quarter may be low). If you have Baugh, dropping chem doesn’t seem like a bad idea. But just see how it goes.

They tell you to enroll in three classes so you guys will have plenty of free time to go and meet new people and participate in activities. If you have four classes are increasing your workload, so it may be harder for you to get out there and have lots of ec’s. I can sit here and say “oh you shouldn’t take more than 3 classes, it will be too hard,” but you guys may be able to fly through these classes like nothing. So see how you like the class, if you understand the material and your professor is good, 4 classes is perfectly manageable. Lots of people take 4 classes/quarter but most people don’t take four classes there first quarter

Thank you guys for the advice. I’ll try it out for the first two weeks first. I look at the schedule of classes right now and there are a lot of opening spots for chem 20A lol. Also, would you guys take Baugh or Gimzewski for chem 20A ?

@Taztastic: While its always suggested for freshman to take 3 classes fall quarter (to get used to school/have time to relax/etc), your schedule is perfectly doable.

Astro 3 + English comp 3 = very easy. French…I’m betting you have some background, but language is generally easy here. Econ 1 will be competitive (as all econ classes are), but I’ve heard great things about Sproul

Remember you can always drop to three classes. (Bus)-Econ is a relatively shorter major so it gives you some flexibility. But if you were to drop one, try to keep econ 1 since that teacher is better than most econ professors + would help save GE’s + without econ1, that schedule would be veryyyy chill.

I’m also a freshman, and I enrolled in four classes as well. But later on, I received an e-mail telling me they have a regulation that incoming freshman can only take three classes, so I was forced to drop one of them…

@slft0215: Can I see a copy of that email? @gatos: Yeah, I’m thinking of dropping French 3, because for now, I just really want to get a head start in my major, since some of the classes require Econ 1 and Econ 2 as a prerequiste.
