Right now I'm thinking of going into business major and while calculating my classes, it looks like its going to take me 3 years to transfer. I'm a freshman (took classes in summer immediately after graduating high school and now in fall session) at SMC.

I just want to know if I'm the only one who seems to be in this situation.

Ahhh…I wouldn’t worry too much about that. The average for community college transfers before they transfer to a 4-year institution is about 2.5-3 years or so.

For example, I’m a Bioengineering major and i’m transferring during the Winter to UCSD, so i’ve spent 2.5 years at my community college.

@edmfanatiq: Yes, I could. But I planned my classes so that I wouldn’t explode. For example, in Spring I’m taking Calculus so for my other classes I’m taking things like art and relatively easy social sciences.

there are alot of students that transfer in 3 yrs, but from wut i have seen, they’re not the smartest of the bunch at my CC. the smart ones are inj and out in 2 yrs or less. no reason why anyone can’t finish in 2 yrs imo

Wow, really? No reason? Not even if you’re a single-parent in your early twenties working 2 jobs? What if you’re taking care of your sick parents? I’m just saying don’t be so quick to judge. You have no idea what may be going on in another person’s life.

jumping to conclusions once again. slippery slope fallacy much? because i was irritated by your statement you conclude that i am demanding to be called “smart”?

no. i am just magnifying the fact that you judge people based on the time that they transfer which is a silly criteria.

Well it depends. If you’re a normal BA type degree you SHOULD be out in 2 years (except if you have… you know a life and other responsibilities). Now on the other hand if you’re doing engineering and need to take 4-5 semesters of math, a semester of programming, 3 semesters of physics, a semester of chem, and your year of english… then yeah it might take more than 2 years haha. I’ll be applying this year (been in 1.5 years, will be 2.5 in the spring) and it’s a crapshoot of if I’ll get in because even though I have a good GPA I will be missing quite a few pre-reqs (didn’t know I wanted to do Comp E until about a year ago).

Well I stayed three years to complete all pre-reqs needed. Once I transferred, I was able to take my upper div’s and have more options with electives. I didn’t find my CC a hellhole so maybe it was easier for me to stay than others.

I took 3 years. I also worked nearly full time. Guess I’m not one of the smart ones…
I would say if you have nothing else going on you should take two, otherwise there’s nothing bad about taking three.

I can give countless examples of brilliant people who took more than 2 years. In fact, a very small minority actually gets in and out of CC in 2 years. Only those that are focused, have no bills to pay, usually live with their parents, and on the first day of CC already know what their major is and where they want to transfer. That is a very small % of students.

A friend fo mine wa all set to transfer from a San Diego CC to SDSU after 2 years. He found out he was missing a pre-req and the school messed something up. He was mad, but made the best out of his 3rd year. He became president of our Phi Theta Kappa chapter and kept his GPA up. Before he was going to transfer he was contacted by many school (4 Ivy league) with scholarships for his hard work. He ended up taking a $95,000 scholarship to Cornell. If he had rushed and done the 2 years, he would have been only at SDSU.

I made the conscious choice to stay an extra year so I could finish ALL my prereqs. I am a double major, and plus I was out of school for 10 years and I want to make sure I have the strong footing of a student before I go on. I am already being pursued by Columbia, but I will also be applying to Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB.

At my CC classes are $0 a unit for me, at Columbia they are $1270 a unit. Makes perfect sense for me to stay 3 years at CC to make sure I spend no more than 2 years at a University.

lakerforever is a ■■■■■, he constantly needs to rationalize his need to take 24 units in one semester.

BoB, how exactly did your friend get schools to pursue him. Just by being the president of PTK?

and to the OP, I’m 23 years old, I did a year or so when I was 18 didn’t like it so I went to work full time. after discovering the glass ceiling I decided it was time to go back to school(while still working full time, and with work paying for it), I am applying to all the UC’s next week. So my total will be 3 years pre transfer as well.

It might take me 3 years to transfer as well. I’m a biz major too but like other posts have said; unless you exactly know what you’re dealing with day 1, it’s going to take more than 2 years to transfer and maturely be prepared for upper division work.

so far i had to withdraw from 2 classes and drop about 3 classes in a year’s worth of college so don’t feel bad if you must stay. remember this is an investment so be cautious.

I’m enrolled in 26 hours for fall including a class during mini holiday term. I just want to get out of community college. Doesn’t mean that transferring in 2 years makes you smart or better in any way. Plus, most girls at community colleges aren’t good looking.

@sanitydc: lmao. yes i’m “constantly” bringing that up…only when YOU keep mentioning u moron. when have i ever brough that up besides that one thread where i asked how many unis people were taking. ur probably still bitter b/c u neither possess the ability or the will to challenge yourself in any way
