Before high school, my family was kind of poor. Born in New York state, but I was sent to China to live with relatives when I was a few months old.

I moved to canada when I was 3. Moved around a few times in vancouver. Family didn't earn so much. I remember we had to use food stamps, and a really dirty small apartment.

Returned to the US, Bay area in Californian, when I was 7. Dad got a good job in software when I was in 8th grade and now we are relatively affluent (60,000-100,000), but we still live basically like we used to and try to save as much as we can. Don't waste money on music lessons, SAT prep, brand name clothes,or eating at restaurants. Will colleges consider my family as "rich" just because of income in recent years?

Of course not. I am pretty lucky that my dad was able find a decent job, but I am just wondering if mentioning it will help in admissions. I don't like going for pity, but in this game of college admissions, every little bit helps. Although people say you don't realize it until you're a parent, a child is a parent's hope and I want to do all I can to make both myself and my parents happy. My parent's have never really pushed me, but sometimes I feel that they really hope I will make someone of myself.

I really should change the title of my thread though to "Am I rich to college admission officers?" since that is what I really want to ask. Basically I am curious if my dad earning (60-100k) will count against me since colleges prefer underprivileged students over privileged ones.
