To the last few posters:
Fewer girls than boys qualify for AIME.
Sending a score to colleges, assuming that the college has not sent out acceptance letters (or if you are on the wait list) is fine. Don't send a long letter explaining all about it, just send a short note.
Taking the AIME as a senior probably won't matter for college acceptance, but that's not really the point in taking it - take it because you enjoy it and may want to do more math competitions.
lockn - there are some local/regional competitions as well as the AMC/AIME/USAMO that have earlier dates. There would be time to send AMC scores as well, and perhaps AIME as well.

What was the cutoff for 12B? 100?

^ i think. 97.5 for A. i was the school winner and AIME qualifier

lol what's B though? When do they release it?

B is released sometime this week, probably tomorrow.

B test cutoffs haven't been released yet.

lockn: You can probably also take the A test if you can find another high school willing to let you sit for it. For other stuff, it depends on where you live. If you PM me your approximate location, I'll be happy to look into some options. It may be getting to be too late this year, as for many leagues, the "postseason" phase starts around now. There should be options in the fall, though.

I was told (by a senior, probably not going to do that again) to follow the strategy to shoot for just over 100, so I answered exactly 14, giving me 100.5 points. I checked all of my answers repeatedly and when they put up the answers (I took the AMC12 B test) they were all correct. So hopefully there weren't any stray marks that got counted as wrong answers elsewhere knock on wood

My question is was I shooting myself in the foot with this strategy? Will colleges look at it and say he barely qualified, or will they say lets see how he does on the AIME, maybe he was just aiming to go straight for 100.5 points?

Next year I am going to answer as many as possible (I think I could have gotten over 20 of them, but I didn't have enough time to check them all and was 100% on the first 14, so I panicked).

what the hell...that's like saying you only want a 650 on the SAT so you should leave a third of the test blank

just look at all the questions and try and solve as many as possible...is it that weird of a strategy to just do your best?

but i guess you qualified for aime which was what you wanted, so congratulations :)

Well I I have taken AP Calc BC, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra all before Junior year, and all of the stuff on the AMC relies on has nothing to do with any of that.

So I am remembering stuff from 4-5 years ago for this test, and I was really freaking out (I wanted to ensure I passed the test, as someone else who took the AMC 12B answered about 20 and they got about 14 right, which is definitely not what I wanted). So really the reason I did that is because I was a nervous wreck, forgot a ton of old stuff, and wanted to ensure that I passed.

From now on I definitely will study for it, and not count on remembering stuff, and I will attempt every problem, and just do them quicker so i have enough time to triple check (I don't feel comfortable turning anything in until I triple check it).

I think you did the right strategy. if you think you could have gotten 20 right then you'll have a successful aime. And a good aime score is more impressive than a 115ish(random high nimber) on the amc. Imo. You'll be fine. It's what I did too.

is it okay to qualify for AIME only two years? my school decided to cancel the test this year, and I was too lazy to travel to a neighboring school.

Thanks Aluminum Boat,

I just received confirmation that I got in to the AIME, so I am just going to practice a ton (take practice AIME tests) and taking the AMATYC for practice at a college I take advanced education classes at (its probably a joke though).

I am just going to strive for a good score on the AIME, that is really important.

Art of Problem Solving Forum

says b cutoff were 120 10b and 100 12b, ie. neither were lowered.

^ fml......

did you miss one and answer 15 or did you get in the 90s or something?

97.5 on 12B lol...

Yep, 100 for AMC 12.
Unfortunately, the top scorer in our school got a 99 (I'd cry if I were that kid)

fucfuhkkkfucjkkkkkkkk I got a 99 on the B. RRGARRARGRGR my fury is raging. stupid bird house. read the frickin question carefully. lamelame. then some dude who is good at guessing gets a 125. It is so strange about the curve. I thought the A was easier and whould've passed if id taken it officially. Im a senior so i cant win anymore....P:

hahahah i got a 100.5; 15 right 3 wrong and 7 blanks (im a freshman btw, no experience w/ any math tests)
basically your mindset should be to answer as many as possible, that way you're bound to get some right. however, unless you're a math genius, i'd advise leaving #s 20-25 blank since you'll probably guess wrong and it's better to get the blank points anyway

the reason you shouldn't JUST answer 14 is b/c:
1) you're not a genius so it's taking a gamble
2) if you ARE a genius, why not get more points for your work?

since qualification for the next step, USAMO, is (your AMC points)+(AIME POINTS x10)>=217, it wold be better to do welll on AMC and get as many points as possible since those questions are easier than AIME questions, which most people get less than 3 on anyway

AIME 1 is on march 17 and i believe AIME 2 is on april 1st this year?

ice-what you said makes sense but it's different for me. I live in a place where nobody scores over a 110 on the AMC. Since each state must have at least one representative for usamo, there's little benefit in me scoring a 110 versus a 100.5. Because I'd either way I'd have to score higher on the aime than anyone else in my state(like 3 other people qualify for the aime).
Usamo index doesn't matter for me.

I know what you said wasn't just directed at me but that's my excuse/logic
