i just found out that i qualified for the AIME test next tuesday, but the thing is, i'm horrible at math and have no clue how i even got in. My question is, is it even worth taking if i know i won't do well?

Yes, it's worth it.

Definitely worth it. You will gain exposure to a very new kind of math that everyone should be exposed to, no matter how bad at math they think they are.

Also, make sure you spend the entire 3 hours working on the test. Don't just give up part way through. It's often the case that problems like these appear completely unsolvable at first, but when you work on them for an extended period of time, you find you're able to make a breakthrough.

Okay thanks, i guess i'll give it a try

i hate math too. i somehow qualified.........heh.......

do you guys not have to take the AMC first?

Yeah, I took the AMC 12B.

I qualified...

I'm sure that's what the author of this thread is talking about too.

The AIME is next tuesday? Really? Crap.

Depends. I'm taking the AIME two because I have NJ standardized testing this coming week. :(

for those of you that hate math.. why did you bother take amc ? if you hate math then dont bother with AIME, since its invitational anyways so why waste 3 hrs doing things you hate?

for those that wants to see some interesting problems and think your brain out for 3 hrs trying to solve these problems, you'll have tons of fun on tuesday. I know I will =p

My school requires everyone to take the AMC....and the AIME (if you qualify)

Well I don't particularly enjoy math, but I'm taking the AIME anyway. 3 reasons- Get, into, college.

Good luck to all of you taking the AIME. I'm coaching a math team, and I have two guys taking the AIME I test on Tuesday. Please don't discuss online your experiences of taking the test AT ALL on the test day. A day or two later, AMC will have posted correct answers on its Web site, and then we can all discuss the test here (that is, right here on this thread). Please wait till then, okay?

Thanks for the reminder and for maintaining testing integrity, Tokenadult.

im taking the AIME tomorrow and ive never taken it before

are there any commonly used formulas or anything that i should review beforehand? i really have absolutely no idea what to expect or anything for this test...ive heard its way different from the AMC

It's probably late for me to post this, but any of the basic facts everyone should know about precalculus math (including geometry) will all be helpful on the AIME. If you haven't had time to review the math, at least go in there with an attitude that you'll stay all three hours and THINK about the problems, working a few until you get answers.

Good luck on Tuesday (tomorrow still, in my time zone). Please don't discuss what you thought of the test after you take it until you see answers posted on the AMC Web site, which will be the unerring sign that it is okay to talk about this year's AIME I test.

I took AMC10 this year as a sophmore for the first time and scored a 107 w/o any preparation (this is after having concurrent enrollment in AP Calculus BC). You should be fine.

heheh AIME today was fun.
no discussion 'till few more days huh? :(

tokenadult: when do the answers usually get posted on the AMC website?

It only solidified why I hate math. :-)

yeah so i took it and i answered 2 question..
