AMC 12 exam

How should you prepare for the AMC 12 exam? I'm planning on preparing over the summer, but I want to know how to prepare. I know that it's a competition and that they don't test specific things that you will learn in calculus or something. Are there any books that you would recommend?

I want to do well on it, especially considering that colleges like MIT look at it now, although you could just leave it blank.

Have you been takling AMC 8 and AMC 10(A/B) tests? You can go to AMC official website and buy previous year papers and answers and try to understand where you stand. There are books recommended in the site too…
Good luck

no I haven’t actually taken them… thanks though

There’s a ton of great information on http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/

What do you think of buying just one of the AoPS books? Should I buy the first one, or the second one, or would you really recommend buying both? I’m a junior with a strong (Chinese) mathematics background. I’d like to start preparing now, over the summer. I only got 89 this year without preparation, but I’d like to at least qualify for AIME next year.

89 isn’t a bad score and you can definitely make the AIME with some practice. Personally, I found that doing old tests was much better practice that learning from a textbook. The AMCs are difficult not because of the content tested, but because of the reasoning that you must employ, so I’m not sure how much reviewing concepts from a book would help.

By the way, for future reference, it is generally bad practice to i) revive an old thread and ii) post the same question twice in the same sub forum.
