Best Graduate Schools - Education - USNews

U.S. News has just published a new set of rankings: Americas Best Graduate Schools 2009. While these rankings are not nearly as well respected as the National Research Council (NRC) evaluations that wont appear for another six months or so, they do give some idea of the quality of research in Princetons Graduate School of Arts and Sciences which reflects on the overall strength of the academic programs.

Because Princeton has such a well-known undergraduate program, some students forget that it is a powerhouse in research and has extremely well regarded graduate students and programs. Some of this is shown in these U.S. News rankings.

Princeton, as most of you know, has no professional schools of law, business or medicine but it can be fairly compared to its peers in graduate programs in the sciences and humanities that nearly all schools have. These include biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, mathematics, physics, economics, English, history, political science, psychology and sociology.

Number of Top Ten Programs in the Sciences and Humanities
(Americas Best Graduate Schools 2009)

12---Harvard, Stanford & Berkeley

9 ----Princeton

8----MIT

7----U. of Chicago & Yale

6----U. of Michigan

5----CalTech, Columbia and UCLA

This is a particularly impressive showing for Princeton given the fact that Harvard, Stanford & Berkeley have significantly more graduate students in these departments and larger graduate school faculties.

The ranking changes just slightly if one looks at schools with the largest number of top five programs in these areas.
