American Chemical Society

I got a letter in the mail saying I"ve been nominated to join the ACS. I have some questions and hopefully somebody can help me out here.

I graduated from HS in 2012, haven't gone to college but I'll start going to community college this fall. I received an invitation from ACS in high school, also two from NSHSS, but I didn't reply. Now I received another from the ACS.

My question is: how do they nominate people? I mean I took chemistry in HS but nothing major, just another class. I did get an A.

Is joining the ACS something prestigious that something only those "selected" can join? Will it help my application when I transfer? I do want to "beautify" my application because one of my target schools is Georgetown, and maybe some Ivy leagues, since my CC has a great record of Ivy league and top school transfers.

No. Focus on what really counts, grades, test scores, leadership at your college and community involvement. You don’t need memberships. Awards are another thing but they should be meaningful.

NSHSS definitely has zero value. If ACS is free, no problem. If it costs you, check its membership privileges’ value to you. As resume filler it has zero value too.
