American Citizen without state residency

Im a us citizen who was born in the USA, and I lived only three years in the US, and I stayed in a single state. I lived the rest of my life abroad. Now im looking to come back and study in a state in which I have no residency. Can I establish residency somehow to get a lowe tuition?. Im 22 between.

You would have to live in that state for a year before enrolling in college to get in state rates.

Do either of your parents still live in that state? That would be different.

Unlikely u will establish residency unless u and your working parent(s) move back and live and work/pay state taxes for a defined duration in the state.

Many schools (some public, but mostly private) offer FA and/or merit aid to citizens irrespective of state of residence.

Different states have different rules. I’m afraid you have a lot of research to do.

Not just different states but different schools have different rules. Google residency and the school name to see what is required.

Some states (reviewed on a case by case basis) will give in state rates if the family is temporarily abroad and has evidence of intent to return ( i.e. maintaining a house, car registration, drivers license, bank acct, voters registration).

Are your parents US citizens/PR?

My parents are not US citizens nor do they reside in the US

You will need to do a bit more research to find out where you can establish residency on your own. Often it is easier for community colleges. At Happykid’s community college in Maryland, students who could demonstrate that they had provided the majority of their own support in the previous 12 months could be considered local residents after three months living in the area.

Is there an office of EducationUSA near where you live? The counselors there might be able to help you figure some of this out. https://educationusa.state.gov/find-advising-center
