I was nominated to go to this by my school. Has anyone been to this program? If so, is it worth attending? As a prospective engineering major, I can’t see how it would be beneficial, seeing as it’s politics/government based (which I am interested in, but I don’t know if I would want to spend a week doing political simulations). Also, does it look good on a college application for an engineering major?
My daughter absolutely loved this, but her interests are in government and public policy. It is a terrific leadership experience and I think in general it looks very good on an application. It is a very, very busy week, and it is all about forming a new government, so if you have no interest in that, it might not be for you But like I said, my daughter raved about it and felt it was an amazing program.
I went to girls state and it was a great program. It also looks good on college applications since only one girl per school is nominated and it is a free program (i.e. not a summer camp that you pay thousands to attend). Even if you aren’t interested in government, it might be an application boost to help you get into the engineering program you want. It might also be interesting to see how the government works because in the future you might want to work as a civil or environmental engineer for the government. Let me know if you have more questions!
My daughter was selected and went. It is a great experience and she was happy she decided to go. Years later she is still friends with the girls she met there.
I went to Boy’s State couple years ago, and it was a fantastic experience. I was elected as an Assemblyman for the House, and got to do fun things!
I’m studying engineering now, so even the slightest interest in our political process should motivate you. Besides, it’s an all-expense paid for trip (minus the travels) by the local AL organization.
I know that if you were to apply for the Naval Academy or the like that they look very favorably on Boys State/Girls State. So to me, it is more of a leadership kind of thing which all colleges look at. Also you will get a chance to meet peers from different places and to practice your public speaking skills.
