??? Bizarre. Clearly the global credit crunch it affecting Britain too, but I wouldn’t describe it as “strife”!!!

Brits can moan a lot but are generally calm and quiet people (unless drunk) for the most part. This is why they shy away from Americans who yell at them.

Please don’t tell me you thought Harry Potter was real!

I’m currently at st andrews, and so i can give you lots of pointers on it;
The town is gorgeous for a start, and 32% of students are internationals, so you will have a lot of company as an American. People are really friendly, if rather preppy; there are quite a lot of wealthy students. Although it’s a bit out of the way you can get to beautiful scenery/big cities/England really easily. University accommodation is incredibly cheap compared to other UK Unis, with the exception of one hall (DRA), and although there aren’t any clubs apart from the student union, there are loads of pubs, Dundee is a bus ride away and there are a lot of private parties (balls and formals are really frequent too). Societies are really popular and there’s a lot of choice there.

As for medicine, all i know is that it’s highly respected, and the students work harder than anyone else here, BUT you won’t spend all your time in st andrews; after your third year you’ll transfer to either Edinburgh or Manchester for the remainder of your degree.

Hope that’s helpful; if there’s anything else, just ask :)

The really important thing to remember about UK unis is that they’re not ranked overall, but according to course. So when you’re looking at rankings, they won’t do you any good unless you look specifically at those who have the courses you want.

Some other schools to look at are Heriott-Watt, York, Bath for architecture if not Cambridge, Warwick, Essex, Exeter, Kings (London) for medicine? Has a good chem/bio/med programme… Oxford Brookes, [i’m trying to remember unis =P], UCL’s good. Have you looked at LSE? Kent, I’m sure there’s a full list of unis in UCAS!

The one thing about St. Andrews just to mention is that about 7 people from the year above me went there. They all hated the place so much that all of them, save one who didn’t have any ideas on where to go, transferred out after the first year. 7 people from my year, though, also went to St. Andrews and all 7 are head over heels with the place!

If you are born in Brazil, but your father is of Italian descent, you may qualify for an Italian passport. Lots of Italian-Brazilians actually have dual citizenship, especially in Sao Paulo and southern Brazil. That is also true BTW in Argentina.

Yes, that’s actually my case. I was born in Brazil, but my father’s family is all from Italy. And we are also from the Sao Paulo state region :]
