So, I was wondering a little bit about UK universities. Yes, of course there's Oxbridge, but I was wondering about the others. I've heard of some, such as Imperial College London, University College London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Essex, Warwick, and the University of St. Andrews....

Any comments on the strength of these universities/what a Brit thinks of these unis?

P.S. I want to go for medical, so keep in mind the strength of the medical program.

P.P.S. I also realize some of these are very hard to get into, but stating that fact negatively won't do much. Imagine you're telling me about Harvard without being all "You'll never get in anyways, sorry."

No, that’s the point. I don’t want to go to medical school in the US…:/

Plus, the program there is a 6-year program that encompasses everything a student here learns in 8+, meaning I wouldn’t do either undergrad or medical in the US

In terms of medical programs, Imperial definitely holds the most prestige. Since I’m not a medic myself, I don’t know much about the others, but I’ve heard that the Oxbridge programs for medicine are quite…old fashioned? with very little practical work? You need to look into that a bit more!

The universities on your list are all considered very good universities over here. Why don’t you also look up York, Exeter and Durham. All three are extremely good (probably better that Edinburgh and Essex) but are a little easier to get into than Imperial/Oxbridge.

I applied to Edinburgh and looked at a couple of the other schools.

Imperial and UCL are very prestigious. St. Andrews is quite up there too. One of my Scottish friends really thought I should apply there.

I don’t know as much about Bristol, Essex and Warwick. I know they’re good, but I’d probably rank them beneath Imperial, UCL, and St. Andrews.

It’s a better idea to look more at the strength of the program than the general prestige though. In England, you really go to school for your subject.

Thanks ineedyouradvice and Millicand, that helped. :] I’l make sure to check out the schools mentioned.

As for the others, I did post on a couple of other forums. However, I didn’t post on the Foreign Medical Education because the place seems empty and I didn’t expect a response anytime soon.

st andrews is quite prestigious. this might seem like flimsy evidence to you but a rather very prestigious boarding school (aka st pauls) in america sends like 10% of its graduating class to just st andrews. if one of the top 20 high schools sends that many people to one uni, it must be pretty darn good, no?
i’ve heard edinburgh was well regarded

totally does not have anything to do with the medical field though =/ just trying to bolster st andrews and rooting for edinburgh :)
