I would like to know if there are specific majors in American University that allow for a dual degree. I read that Musical Theatre kids usually do a dual degree. Can they do it with Audio Technology? Do you apply for both?

First, although you indicate on your application what major you are interested in, you are admitted to AU generally, not held to a specific major, and you don’t officially select one until after the end of sophomore year, so it doesn’t matter whether you put one or two potential majors on your application. As far as double majoring is concerned, if you can fit all the required courses into your four years, you can double major, minor, triple major, etc., in whatever areas you want. But as a practical matter, it maybe difficult to get all the required courses done unless you enter with AP credits, for example.

MommaJ hit the nail on the head but I just wanted to say a few things:

You are admitted to AU just like any other student, but I am sure you are assigned an adviser within the school that you were admitted to. As an AU student myself, it shows what program you are in on the myAU portal. However, this does not matter considering you can change majors at any time and most of your first and second year will be spent on general education courses.

Like MommaJ said, if you can fit it in your schedule, it will work. There are certain tracks for dual degrees (mostly the BSBA in Business and International Studies), but I wouldn’t know for Musical Theatre and Audio Tech. My advice: get here and go set up an appointment with your adviser!

Thank you for your replies. I understand how it would work on majors that do not require an audition, but for those that do, I am not quite sure I understand how it works. In the case of Audio Tech and Musical Theatre, you would have to audition for MT before you are admitted, and so it seems you have to declare it your major to request the audition. If you were not quite sure and would also like to audition for a Music Performance major, I am not sure if you could do it, and then decide based on the results of the auditions. In addition, I understand you could get a scholarship, for a specific major, so you would need to know the results before you make a decision, since you would not be able to change majors without losing the scholarship.

Yes, you would have to audition to be accepted into the musical theater program, but you still don’t definitively commit to any major (or “declare”) until you have two years under your belt. My D auditioned and entered AU as a musical theater major, but decided to go a different route and ended up majoring in Psychology and minoring in Education Studies. She was never officially considered a MT “major” despite having been accepted into the program because no one officially majors in anything for two years. If you think you might want to major in MT, by all means audition during the application process–no one will hold you to that choice two years later. BTW, you can also audition into the MT program after you have become an AU student, but my guess is that it’s harder to be accepted into the program at that point–it’s worth inquiring about. As far as scholarships are concerned, have you even determined whether they are available for specific majors, in particular, the majors that interest you? This may not be an issue at all.
