My son (Asian-Indian) has a 34/36 on the ACTs, 780 Subject SAT Bio, 760 Subject SAT Chem. His GPA is 3.0. He goes to a top private school in Manhattan/NYC. I add this fact, because, I was told that the weighted GPA can be higher as a result. He has taken tough courses (e.g. Advanced Physics, Adv Math, Adv Computer Sci). Was told that schools would look at these favorably. Not sure though. He is on the school football team (but, it is not a school known for this sport).

Question: What are his chances at American University in DC?

Catria, he does not want to stay in the city. Wants to move away from home. Really wants to look at AU, George Washington. George Mason (maybe). Georgetown (of course, but, its unlikely given the numbers).

APsooof, Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. He is going to apply to George Washington and Georgetown (this is a stretch). He has a few things going for him: He is on the football team, so, it shows some diversity in interest and perseverance. He has also done some interesting summer work which could count favorably. Your comment is very helpful in creating a strategy: Deciding on EA & ED. Deciding on which schools are target vs. stretch vs. safety. So, thank you again.

My son got an offer from AU. It includes a scholarship of $10K per year and a $5K low cost federal loan. Pretty cool. His first choice is GT (He did not make the EA cut there). I don’t see much hope there. It is possible he gets waitlisted. We will know in a few days.
In the meantime, here is my question:
The cost at AU is $60K per year (all included, except travel): $15K is covered by scholarship and low-cost loans. for the remaining $45K what are our borrowing options? I’ve heard they are PLUS? But, I don’t know much about these options.
