These both seem very comparable, but AU seems to be a little cheaper. I have also heard that AU is also better academically. Can anyone enlighten me or compare them? I haven't been able to really distinguish anything of the two. Thank you!

What’s your prospective major?

Political Science w/ minor in economics probably. I haven’t quite decided between Poli Sci and International Affairs while doing ROTC (after undergrad, taking an education leave to get JD as to be a JAG).

Both are good, I think GWU’s program is better for that.

Georgetown’s definitely the best though for DC area, plus it’s the host school for the ROTC battalion.

LOL they’re both expensive, even if AU is ‘a little cheaper’.

GW is higher ranked academically, but you need to find the school that is the best fit for you. Both are very expensive. You should check into the availability of ROTC programs on campus for these schools (I think GW has ROTC on campus while American does not but I am not certain so you need to do some research).

How are your scores? AU is test optional GWU isn’t…

Peer schools academically but I think American has better environment. Much more livable and vibrant. SO, AMERICAN all the wayyy !!

If you check out my other posts I did a chance me for AU. AU has Army ROTC while GW only had Navy. Princeton Review ranks AU better academically than GW also.

American isn’t the host school for any ROTC program. GWU and AU students can participate in AROTC though, you just have to go to classes at Georgetown: [Georgetown University - The Hoya Battalion](http://rotc.georgetown.edu/).

DS (HS 2013) had 3 friends choosing between these schools –

The friend with the higher stats (GPA and SAT) chose AU because he really felt “home” there. He has access to programs offered to top students. He likes the “green” space.

The other 2 chose GW – 1 for the specific major; the other kid I think for the prestige.

Both offer solid academics. Both enjoy wonderful internships. Either way, you are in DC and have access to many things. Choosing between these schools is like splitting hair. In the long run, the difference in rankings is negligible. Go with fit.

Are you applying ED? If not, apply to both and decide later.

Correct, neither are hosts for any ROTC; however, their respective websites specify that AU has Army and AF, while GW has Navy. I was planning on applying ED for AU because they have a specific cohort that I am very interested in applying to. Before I commit to ED, though, I do want to visit both to get the feel and hope to visit this summer. I believe that I can get into either, especially if I apply ED. If you would like to see what I mean I did a post that included my GPA, test scores, EC’s, etc., so I believe that would be on my profile.

Here’s the link with the info.

I guess what I am seeing is that there really isn’t a noticeable difference academically or with things like internships between the two?

Nope, not a huge difference. AU has more of a campus than GWU (GWU has pretty much no campus), so if there’s that to consider. Both have solid programs, and they’re both in DC, so I honestly think you can’t go wrong. I think your visit will really give you a better idea of which you’ll like better.

And for the record, their website says that GW students can do AROTC at Georgetown, same way it is for AROTC students at AU, I don’t really know why you don’t think you can’t do it with GW:

That’s pretty much what the AU website says about it too, except substitute “GW students” with “AU students”.

I saw ur stats. You have pretty good stats. I believe GW’s min ACT is a 28. So ur in range. I personally love GW.

Two of my sons chose AU, one for undergrad, one for grad school.

The son who chose AU for undergrad had slightly higher grades/scores than you, but still applied to ED…he wanted to take no chances that his application would get lost in a big pile, he knew getting in ED was a lock, and he wanted to enjoy the rest of his senior year.

He visited all the DC campuses but just fell in love with AU. He loved the fact that there is a real campus–he wanted the stereotypical experiences of having class and throwing a frisbee on the quad.

But what he really loved was the energy he felt on the campus…

the students he met just seemed very much what he wanted himself to become, if that makes any sense to you. They were intelligent, well spoken, ambitious, savvy–and yet very friendly. They were involved both on campus (something he did not sense at GW) and in DC–both with internships and all sorts of volunteer opportunities.

You should visit each of the campuses and see what vibe feels best to you. Some kids really want the ultra-urban vibe of GW; my son didn’t, because he figured that the only time in his life he could have the traditional college experience was as an undergrad.

Yet at AU, he could still have the urban experience as well. He and his friends all work internships in DC, and go out all the time–and see their friends from GW all over the city.

GW is much better academically overall and has a much better reputation. They are not really comparable.

How long does it really take to get downtown from AU? I know the red line runs from right outside the university.

And @Reader12, the Princeton Review actually ranks AU higher academically than GW, but you are definitely right in saying that GW has a better reputation thus-far. What makes you think that they are not comparable?

I haven’t really heard striking things abt AU but my friend goes and LOVES it. So I’m sure u would too. If u went. And ur scores r good.

They are academically comparable. American has much more of a traditional campus feel yet it is very quick to get into the center of DC from there. I would be reviewing the financial circumstances closely. The quality of the package offering from each school would greatly influence my decision.
