OK, so I'm looking for info, on american. All I basically know about it is are the stats from the collegeboard website. I need more personal info. like if most people like it there, how is the social scene, etc you guys know the drill. Also is there financial aid good?

I went on a tour of American with my son. Went from George Washington U to American. Basically you get the metro then you get a bus to American. The campus was nice and the people very friendly. My son did not care for the campus as it is pretty remote...they amp up the Washington DC thing but it is definitely in the suburbs....the tour people always tell you they like it there so I cannot help with that...

I visited with my family a few months ago. Gorgeous campus, GREAT, safe area. Nice people, good amount of shopping/food/entertainment. Only problem I had with it was there were too many gay guys and i'm not into politics--(D.C.-whooda thunk it?)
Overall though, I really liked it.

^ PR's info on American University. I usually find it pretty helpful.

American University is a great school for International Relations and Political Science but I don't really think you should consider going if you want to do something else. All of the programs at AU are growing and the main two reasons why AU suffers in rankings like US news is because the school has a relatively low endowment, I think in part because of the lack of any hard sciences at AU, and also a lot of their staff is part time because they are specialists in the DC area. The School of International Service is a very good school, especially for the price. AU offers merit awards for 15K, 18K, and 25K and also is pretty good with meeting need if you qualify. Although one poster said it is "located in the suburbs", I think thats kind of a stretch. AU is less than a 5 minute bus ride from the Tenleytown station on the red line, and if you don't know the DC metro system - it can get you to basically every significant destination in DC. The benefit of AU's campus is that it is basically a feel of a small LAC in a big city(which makes it a whole lot different from the NYU's and GW).

Im going to AU in the fall because:
A) I was satisfied with my merit award(much better than any other OOS school)
B) I love their IR program
C) I love their internship program and basically everything else DC has to offer for a politically active college student
D) The girl - guy ratio around 70-30. This is even better when you consider how many gay guys there are at AU.

More about the social scene -

AU is a dry campus and therefore enforces relatively strict penalties for drugs and alcohol on campus. However, you have a lot of rights and if you are smart about it you won't get in trouble. In addition, there is no shortage of off campus parties and bars if that is your sort of thing.

My stay at American was fairly good. The dorm situation and small campus size were my only complaints. It's not much of a campus, one big quad, two dorm complexes and an art center (nice, new one by the way).

I have yet to visit the new SIS building (I'm not sure if it's open yet), but if you are a future IR major, that's a treat for you. Dining hall was pretty satisfying, but I wish there were more options.

The school itself sits in pretty historic neighborhood atop Embassy Row, so like Georgetown, you really don't have too big a feeling of being in D.C. as most would think, but it's is still within the city limits.

Another thing you might to consider is the male to female ratio. I know a girl who goes to AU currently and with the 2:1 female to male ratio, it sucks (in her own words) to be a girl. Of course, that's only if you're into dating in college, but... Just thought I'd share that with you.

why is there a lot of gay guys at american?

I don't know but 70% female 30 % male with and good 10% gay guys sounds great. American here I come, aslong as they accept me and give me tons of aid, lol.
