Amherst College Class of 2017 Official Thread

Hey everyone,
This is pretty self-explanatory. If you are applying to Amherst College ED or RD or what have you, consider posting here to talk with other people who are applying! If you want, post your stats, questions, etc.

Applied ED…looking forward to Dec 15

Are you sending ACT or SAT w/ Subject Tests?

My son sent all , ie ACT, SAT, and SAT subject tests. His ACT and SAT were fairly comparable, so he figured it would be good to send both.

Applying to Amherst!! Did the DIVOH weekend and super nervous about Dec 15th… Anyone else applying ED?

I just sent in ACT w/ writing

What ACT composite score do you all have?

Is Amherst really need blind for international students?

Applying RD…Yale SCEA preventing me from doing ED, but Amherst is my 2nd choice (tied with Wesleyan)

According to this article, Amherst College to Extend Need-Blind Admission Policy to International Students | 04/2008 | Amherst College, Amherst is need blind for international students.

hey guys! how many of you applied ED to Amherst? It’s my first choice college, followed by UChicago, MIT, Caltech and so on… haha… I am an international applicant. Really fingers crossed for Dec 15. I hope I get in.

All the best to all of you too!

Good luck to all! I’m a current 3rd year student who loves it here. Feel free to PM me with any questions at any point in the application process-- I’d be happy to talk with you about Amherst.

Keilinger, what don’t you like about Amherst?

Would you say that people are very receptive to new and outlandish ideas?

I’m applying RD! And I went to a DIVOH weekend also! Amherst is one of my top choices.

What I don’t like: If you’re originally from a city (like I am), Amherst will probably start to feel very small to you after two years. Doing a domestic exchange or study abroad for a year or a semester can help with this. (People consistently say that they appreciate Amherst even more after having been away.)

Secondly, because the campus is quite small and people take time off to study abroad, etc., certain clubs are often not as well organized as they could be. Someone told me the same of Dartmouth when I was looking at colleges, so generally speaking, size seems to be both a college’s selling point and disadvantage. A critique that’s more specific to Amherst would be that the food isn’t all that good, especially considering how much you pay for it. I will say, however, that Val has improved so much over the past three years that it’s hardly recognizable from when I was a freshman. The staff is also surprisingly responsive to students’ suggestions. Quite frankly, I love it at Amherst. Although I’m taking time away next semester, I recognize that my need to get away from the campus would likely be the same were I attending any other LAC. I hope that helps!

People here are pretty open in general, and you will find your fair share of quirky folks here. As seriously as students take their studies here, we tend not to take ourselves too seriously (see if you can catch a Gad’s improv comedy show if/when you visit). So yeah, I would say Amherst student body is open to “outlandish” ideas.

Keilinger,
Not that you know the exact number, but does everyone at Amherst appear to have a 2100-2300 SAT score? Odd question, but in general I am just wondering. I go to a well-sought after prep school and am in top 10% of the class, but my SATs are below Amherst’s average. Do you know if Amherst puts more significant weight on SATs or grades?

Have you taken the ACT? You’ll have to confirm this on their website but I believe Amherst will take ACT scores in lieu of SAT scores.

I’n not sure how Amherst weighs grades relative to SAT scores, but Amherst looks at applications holistically, meaning no cut-and-dry calculations. If you’re in the top 10% at a prep school, you seem to be in good shape.

No, I have not and I have already sent in my ED app. Thanks for your responding by the way!
One more quick question: are the majority of students from private high schools?

More from public schools, actually.
