what is it like at Amherst? i visited, but it was a rainy day so no one was really out. Is it nerdy, unnerdy etc. what are kids/social life like?

To summarize it as much as I can: it's whatever you want it to be like. We're famous for not having a definite school type so there is no mainstream here. Most of the people who come here are aware of this fact, in my opinion, so they are open to others. We have jocks, we have nerds, we have indies and we have the majority that is inbetween these.
Social life - Amherst is not a big party school, but there seem to be some parties, both public and private at the end of each week. There is also the famous TAP, which happens about once a month. Although I cannot find a typical Amherst student, I can say that most of the people here are quite friendly.

I wouldn't say it is nerdy, but people do spend a lot of time working. One of the things i like best is the lack of major competition between students, and the lack of excessive stress. I don't know if other people feel the same way, but as far as work goes, I think we all work hard without obsessing. There are plenty of parties, but I've had no problem finding plenty of non-alcohol things to do. I agree that people are very friendly and open minded.
