Amount of clothes to bring to college

Oh my God. You have a lot of clothes. In all the dorm rooms that I’ve seen, there is no way that all your stuff is gonna fit! You have to cut stuff down. Maybe try and make a few piles of stuff: a "must-have-absolutely-cannot-live-without/will-wear-all-the-time pile, a “I-really-like-this-and-wear-it-a-lot” pile, a “i-like-this-but-don’t-wear-it-much-pile”, and a “well…-i-can-do-without-this pile.” Then get rid of AT LEAST the last pile. No one is going to care if you repeat the same shirt every other week, or even every week. It’s college, not a fashion show.

I’ve been packing and repacking things, slowly dwindling the amount of clothes and stuff down that I originally thought I’d be bringing. My car only is going to hold two 20 x 20 boxes and two 16 x 16 boxes, plus my backpack and a very small green crate. This has caused me to rethink the amount of stuff I can bring. As of right now, I’m bringing:
A lot of t-shirts…probably about 15-20 since it’s basically all I wear (sleep, class, working out, weekends…I live in t-shirts, especially tie-dye that I’ve made)
About 5 pairs of jeans (I also wear jeans everyday)
5-7 pairs of sweatpants/pajama pants
11 pairs of shorts (3 jean shorts, 1 nice pair of shorts, and 7 work out/sleep shorts)
About 15 “nicer” shirts/tank tops (for going out, or for the rare occasion where i feel like putting some effort in to how i look in the mornings)
5 camis/tank tops
2 pairs of khaki/dress pants
2 skirts
5 dresses
8 pairs of shoes (including running shoes, shower shoes, soccer cleats, and slippers)
3 hoodies
3 nice sweaters
1 Rain Jacket
Enough socks/underwear/bras to help me make it through the occasional week or so of skipping laundry

I’ve packed my winter stuff away to get around Thanksgiving or October break, depending on how well I’m handling the cold. I’m from New England and hardly ever wear long sleeves or a winter jacket during the winter, so i’m hoping i can hold off on my warm stuff until at least October.

All of my clothes are going to have to fit into one 20 x 20 box (I’m a pro at folding and packing, but i might be getting rid of some t-shirts or something =(.

This thread basically embodies why men despise living with women. Seriously do you really need to have 400 shirts, 16 shoes, 10 hats, 20 gloves, 5 sweaters, and 10 scarfs? 10 pairs of jeans and 6 pairs of casual pants? What the eff?!

My wardrobe consists of a couple of jackets, 3 pairs of long pants, 3 pairs of shorts, socks/underwear/undershirts, and about 10 shirts. Oh and 2 pairs of shoes (normal + dress). That’s all you really need.

holy $hit you have way too many clothes and shoes. You can’t honestly need even half that amount. It’s your money though, so do what you please (unless your parents bought it all for you, then there’s a problem).

Ok, well you got your answer. Everyone is telling you you have way too much. Most of these people have at least one year of college under their belt. You do not need that many clothes. You don’t even need half that many clothes. Or shoes. Everyone’s telling you that (in your other packing thread too…) but you can’t seem to accept that maybe we might actually know what we’re talking about. You asked for advice, we’re trying to help. All those clothes will become a pain. It’s just college, after all. No one’s going to care if you wore an outfit one week ago, one month ago, etc.

Ok, yep I get it ok.

You really don’t seem to get it, lol. Every thread you have created has ended exactly the same way. You have no college experience so I suggest you listen to those of us who do.

Maybe you should buy moar clothes.

Protip from a college student: absolutely no one gives a flying f*** if you wear the same outfit more than once a semester.
Protip from a male: none of us will notice that you are wearing the exact same outfit you wore a month ago, even if we’ve been dating for years

Protip from male cont’d. You could probably wear the same thing every day and as long as it shows cleavage we wouldn’t notice or care.

Speak for yourself pyroza.

Quite true.

You really don’t want to go that long without doing laundry. I mean, all those dirty clothes hanging around your room for weeks? Your roommate’s gonna hate you, and no one’s going to want to come over. Force yourself to less clothes so that you won’t be tempted to skip the laundry for more weeks than necessary

Yeah I guess I’ll just do laundry like every 2 weeks, or sooner if I need to wash a specific thing I want to wear again. They won’t be “hanging around the room”, I have a laundry basket, duh!

The stench of dirty clothing only worsens over time and having 40 items of worn clothing in your laundry basket will make your room smell disgusting.

People who do laundry every 2 weeks are disgusting as hell. How could you sit there and let 2 weeks of clothes accumulate? Get your lazy asses up and go to the damn laundry room. And don’t tell me doing laundry every 2 weeks saves money because unless you’re wearing underwear and socks to class, you’re looking at a minimum of 3 washer machines (2 for colors and 1 for white).

who the hell separates colors and whites? I don’t think I’ve ever done that and I’ve never had color bleeding problems.

I literally can’t afford to separate my colors and lights/whites when I do laundry. Everything goes in one washer and on cold. And if something bleeds, who cares? My white t shirts come out a little more gray? Ehh. Not a big deal.

^No the question is who DOESN’T separates colors and whites? It’s not about color bleeding. It’s about bleach. There are certain stains that get in whites that detergent alone can’t tackle. Only bleach (with detergent) can tackle those stains. You can’t add bleach to a washer machine filled with both whites and colors unless you want your coloreds to pay the price.

You need to separate them…I do care about something dark colored fading onto something white.

Also, certain items that I have and they’ve been washed before still bleed color every time, so they just get hand washed by themselves!!! Then they go in on their own spin cycle. I have certain black items that have to go on their own, plus my PINK stuff (you know, the Victoria’s Secret stuff, just in case some guys here don’t know what PINK brand is). That PINK clothing bleeds color a lot!!!

You really don’t need to bleach your whites… I’ve found it unnecessary. Save your money and mix them all together. Never been an issue and I’ve been doing my own mixed laundry for about 10 years without issue. Heck, I still have some clothes from 6-7 years ago that looks fine. And two weeks is fine for laundry. Unless you’re doing a lot of exercising, your clothes shouldn’t really smell THAT bad after 2 weeks.

I also have no problem washing and drying delicates and lingerie with normal clothes. If it’s really THAT delicate, I won’t buy it because it’s really unnecessary imo.
