Amount of clothes to bring to college

i never use bleach, my clothes still look fine

then again I don’t really wear anything that’s just white. In fact, at a quick glance at the pile of clothes in my hamper, it’s grays, blacks, greens, blues, pretty much anything but white.

best part is none of this is fancy clothing with futuristic textile technology

I don’t bleach whites either, just separate colors in different loads and you’re good.

Sometimes, if I’m washing LOTS of stuff at once, I make several piles: whites, black/other dark stuff, pink/orange/red/yellow bright colors, light blues/greens/pinks, etc. and piles like that.

I separate into light, dark, delicate (may go in light if not enough), and towels and use OxiClean for stains.

I do dark and then white+lights. I hateee bleach.

Like I mentioned that I DO separate colors and whites, the only exception is that sometimes I do all jeans together, whether they’re light or dark, because I’ve found that they usually don’t bleed color that much, and several pairs of jeans (plus a couple other pants sometimes) can take up a whole load on their own.

I mean bleach is not expensive and it’s only one extra washer machine for whites so I don’t mind kicking out an additional 1.25 at my school to wash my whites in a separate washer machine. While 1.25 over the course of multiple weeks adds up, it’s not that serious to me. It’s not like to wash your whites in its own washer machine costs an extra $50 or something. FOR ME, I just don’t feel like the whites are getting properly washed unless you add bleach. But that’s me. As I can see, others have different views on this.

i desegregated my laundry room

I’m just curious; how much does it cost to was/dry at you guys schools? It costs me 1.25 to wash and 1.25 to dry :frowning: I’ve heard of schools where it costs a quarter.

^^Ha ha ha but I think we’re all going to laugh when you have something dark that finally bleeds onto something white! Not that it will be funny for you though…

and at ^, it’s free at my school (or included in our tuition and fees, probably, but we don’t need quarters or anything)

The only time in recent memory where clothes bled onto other clothes was when I was wearing a jean jacket. I had been out in the rain and the jacket had never been previously washed. I sat on a bench to smoke a cigarette and naturally rested one arm on top of a leg. When I lifted it up there was a big blue stain on the pants :stuck_out_tongue: but it washed out easily.

I don’t separate because I just don’t wear any light clothes, lol. Everything is either dark or bold/bright colors. I only have like 3 white/pastel items in my entire wardrobe, so I hand-wash those in the sink if they need to be cleaned.

I never separate my colors… unless it’s specifically an item of clothing that I know is going to bleed, and right now, I can only think of two of those. I just wash those with my jeans and I’m good to go.

The only time i ever messed up my laundry, was this one time, when somehow a crayon got by me and landed in a pocket in a pair of shorts in the dryer… now that was an absolute disaster.

^
I do that with pens a lot.

You see our uniforms have nifty little pockets for pens in them so you can always have one handy. Thing is, I always forget that I have a pen in the pocket. I usually don’t find out until the inside of my drier looks like a picture of modern art.

If I use my ID card (we use them to pay for everything at school as well as get in the dorms), it’s 1.10 to wash and 1.25 to dry. If I don’t, it’s 1.25 to wash and 1.50 to dry.

Laundry is free at my school. :)

1.50 wash 1.25 dry. But sometimes it can take even more money for the dryer since they dont work too well (only for like a bunch of towels). EDIT: That is, towels take longer to dry.

I rarely separate colors as I really dont have enough to justify it, and also, how big are the laundry rooms at your schools? Theres not an infinite supply of washing machines, and there is always people doing laundry. Ive had to wait for a dryer at 1:30 am on a weeknight.

In my freshman dorm, there were 11 or 12 washers and dryers. In my second dorm, 1 of each. In my third dorm, 5 of each.

Yeah I just separated everything such that it whats whites vs non-whites. Everything white went in one washer machine and everything else went in the other.

I am trying to pack as much as I will need without packing too much. I am going through my clothing and trying on some of the stuff that I have not worn in a while (for example, the jeans that I don’t wear in the summer).

Then I sort the clothes into different piles:
-It fits, I like it, I will likely take it
-It fits, I like it, I might take it if there’s room
-It fits, I like it, but it’s winter clothing so I will get it on Thanksgiving break to wear in winter.
-It doesn’t fit or I don’t like it. Do not take. Consider giving to younger sister or Goodwill.
-Pajamas, underwear, socks that I will bring.

I’m trying to find the best way to pack the clothing. I’m thinking about taking one suitcase with some winter clothes which I will store under my bed till it gets colder. Then I will pack the summer/fall type clothes in trashbags because I will put those in my dresser drawers/closet when I get there. Then, on Thanksgiving break, I will bring home some of the summer clothes and trade for some more pants/long sleeve shirts.

I’m new at this, so I’m not sure if this would be the best way to approach things.

why don’t you just not bring any winter clothes and then get them on thanksgiving break?
my freshman year i brought just under two weeks worth of clothing. but i’m in california so “winter clothes” were just hoodies and jeans basically
