Amtrak from Columbia Days to Bulldog Days?

I'm taking trains from DC to Columbia Days to Bulldog Days to ADOCH...anyone want to hang out on the train?

Just to reccomend something. You might want to take the Metro North trains that leave from Grand Central from New York to New Haven instead of Amtrak as they are about $30 cheaper. The Amtrak trains are slightly nicer but not by that much and the Metro North trains run much more often.

barski, I have EXACTLY the same itinerary! How are you going to work it out? All the times conflict!

I'm skipping out on the ends of Columbia and Yale to make it to all of them. I haven't booked trains so I'm going to have to get creative there. Are you driving or taking trains?

I second the advice to take the Metro-North commuter train, which is cheaper and gives you a lot more flexibility. You don't book those trains in advance; just show up and buy your ticket at Grand Central Station (there's a big surcharge if you buy it on the train). Here's a link to the Metro-North schedules: http://as0.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm.

Just make sure you go to the right train station: Metro-North leaves from the gorgeous Grand Central Terminal, at 42nd Street and Park Avenue; whereas Amtrak leaves from the (much grubbier) Penn Station, at 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue. Both arrive at the same station in New Haven; Yale usually has shuttle buses to the campus for Bulldog Days.

I'm planning to take the Metro North train to New Haven at 1:07 PM, missing a little of Columbia's open day and a little of Bulldog Day. I would be thrilled to have someone (or lots of people!) join me!

My family and I were thinking about taking the train, but we think that renting a car will be cheaper (about 85 dollars instead). What do you guys think about this?

Doesn't Columbia have days on campus on the 20th and 21st? and yale on the 18th and 19th?

whatever you do, if you take a train from NYC, DO NOT TAKE AMTRAK,
TAKE METRO NORTH INSTEAD (and stop by the yale club next door to grand central on vanderbilt). It's far more frequent out of grandcentral and it costs 1/3 the price.

It depends upon how big your family is and how long you're staying, since you'd probably have a pay a garage for overnight parking in New Haven. If you buy a Metro-North ticket at the station, the off-peak round-trip fare from Grand Central to New Haven is $28.

The Yale Club is great, but you have to be a member (or with a member) to get in. :(

well only four will be going, so the car should be big enough. Also, they will just park it at their hotel that they will be staying at while I'm at Yale

going from columbia days to bulldog days? shouldn't it be the other way around?

yea, bump esmeralda's post.

Columbia Days begin on the 15th and end on the 17th, Bulldog Days start on the 18th

I've just decided to make it easier on myself and skip out on Columbia Days....Also, I had an AMAZING overnight stay at Brown on Thursday and am looking forward to ADOCH. I hate having to choose between Brown/Yale. It's great to have choices....but it also stinks.

You can probably arrive late Sunday at Yale dude. I think they can handle it.
