Cheap/easy way to travel from NY to Yale?

Just wondering what the most cost/time efficient approach is in terms of transportation.

metronorth rail road is the easiest

Is that accessible from Penn Station? I forget if you have to go to Grand Central or not

The New haven line of Metro North leaves from Grand Central. There might be an Amtrak Train from Penn Station - look it up. It might be faster but more expensive. Probably the cheapest is a bus form the Port Authority bus station on 40th and 8th avenue

Do you have to book ahead for Amtrak? Never taken it before

how much will the train ticket from NY to CT cost? Is it more expensive than taking a bus?

You Can Look Up The Fares On Line. On Amtrak, You Need A Ticket Before Your Board. You Can Buy It On Lineor At The Station. You Only Need A Reservation If You Go On The Premium Trains Like The Metroliner Or Acela.

I Dont Know The Fares But Ususally The Train Is More Than The Bus.

There is a bus for like $18 both ways I believe. To Boston is about $35.

The train is probably the cheapest, since it's run by the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority. Public mass transit, equivalent of the subway.

I think it is Metro North, I think it is $26 one way with a student ID and this is probably with advanced booking online as some else mentioned.

No, it is more like $14 (or less) one way regular.

Go to http://www.mta.info/mnr/ for all the info you want about Metro-North Railroad. I take this every day on my commute, from Grand Central to my suburban town in CT. (I get off before New Haven, which is the last stop.) No advance reservation necessary; usually a seat available, although it may be a middle seat. To bring a bicycle, you'll need a reservation. Dogs generally not allowed. Large suitcases can be accomodated by leaving them in the "vestibule" (the area around the doors). Totally safe, relatively comfortable.

Definitely Metro-North. My D takes it about once a month from Yale to NYC to visit friends on the weekend. It's much cheaper than Amtrak, the trains run more often, and Grand Central is a lot nicer than Penn Station.

My error, $24 is the peak hours on paying on board cost, not online.

You buy tickets at the station, where there are tons of ticket machines... if you buy them onboard the train I'm sure they hit you with a big surcharge.
