I was founder of an Engineering Club at my school. I am also the president. At the time I was filling out my application, I had not been elected president. I was then elected president, but i forgot to add it to the activities list. Then I sent in the application. What should I do?

you can create a new version of the common app for your later schools
for the school you already sent it to, I would write a letter telling them about it

It is perfectly normal to receive honors during the deliberation weeks of admissions. Send in hard copy by mail a brief memorialization of your position. Make cogent statements about it, keep it very simple/short, ask for this to be added to your file. Sign off. My son resorted to an occasional FAX when he received a signficant honor in very late winter. Can't hurt...just don't natter on.

I agree - send then a note. you dont even need to say you forgot to include it. Just say "since I filled out the app, I have been ....

I know there is a positive in sending the letter (they will know of another significant leadership position), but are there any negatives?

I dont think so - it seems all the adcoms i have spoken too feel that sort of thing is fine. As long as you are not a pest, communicating with the adcoms is fine.

It would be foolish to not send in significant awards in science fairs, debates, elections or sports. Just keep your tone matter of fact and in proportion to the information you are sharing. They know you have not been awarded the Nobel Prize, but many senior honors and regional awards are awarded after Winter Break. Do it in memo format is my advice, with a polite request to have it added to your file for review. State the honor in terms that don't make them guess at the significance of your selection..so never overstate or understate. Clarity and transparency. They are swamped with factoids and data and don't need to have to look stuff up or guess at what it means. If your organization is not self explanatory, make a cogent one sentence statement. If your award was a selection from tens, or hundreds or regional applicants or just a local school selection, make it clear. Honesty is always a good thing to convey.
