FLASHCARDS FLASHCARDS FLASHCARDS. I have an app on my phone where I make flashcards and I just review stuff if I ever have free time. It saves time later when you’re actually studying for a test.

Get off this site until you’re a rising junior.

Lone exception is if you’re scheduling classes.

Classof2015HS: Thanks! But the writing down stuff…doesn’t really help me…its too boring for me…i won’t learn anything

Tarheel: I always end up procrastinating…I am not obsessed with ivy league schools…I mean ill probs apply but I am more focused on getting into a good pre-med/med program that suits me…its still a long way ahead and i have no idea what ahead of me

Halyconheather: Thanks!!! this was the most helpful advice…U are really dedicated to move to Calc BC from a standard course! Congrats! Its a major accomplishment! I might take a course over the summer so I don’t have to double up sophomore year…idk about my school’s policy though…I still have college as a motivation…but im just going to think about living high school to the fullest b4 i think about essays and such…I am looking at hospital volunteer opportunities and I found a couple for 14 and over but most of them require u to be 16…ill find something…I agree about how stupid it is that people push freshman away but it is what it is…

AnImpAffliction: That’s a good study tip! Thanks

Repede: I’ll probably more prepared in the long run…

@ StarJazzy. I made the mistake of screwing over my freshman year. Don’t let that be you.

Be prepared and keep track of important dates. DO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS/PROJECTS AS SOON AS YOU GET THEM. I personally use Google calendar, that way I can always look at any device for my schedule for that day

Find a notetaking sysem that works for you. I personally use th Question, evidence, and Summary method that’s outlined here on post 2: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/history-social-sciences/1528204-how-i-got-5-ap-us-history-exam-you-can-too.html (I know I’m self advertising but the method actually works)

Give yourself a 48 hr window to learn/study/master new material; you don’t want to be left cramming unnecessarily for a midterm

Always have room for friends, do what you love and do it well, and don’t stress about school. Colleges want to see a human being on paper, not a mindless anti-social drone who hasn’t seen the light of day studying for Advanced Multivariable Calculus for Rocket Scientists.

Sleep early

@Repede What’s the point of pushing a freshman off the site? There are loads of helpful resources here that will ensure that you won’t end up learning lessons in hindsight (though I’ll admit, some of the “Chance me posts” and “college RD results” can be absurd if not a bit damaging to one’s self esteem.)

Do not screw up freshman year :(

By far easiest year to get straight A’s so do it!

Quizlet is an excellent resource for studying.

The easiness of freshman year is exaggerated here in my opinion.

Actually care about school freshmen year. If you don’t, it really will haunt you down the road when you’re applying to colleges. I didn’t care freshmen year, and the D I got the 4th quarter of Algebra II really makes me cringe every time I see it! It didn’t impact my GPA (semester grade was still a B) but god it looks horrible on a transcript! Realize that freshmen year DOES matter and do your best.

I disagree with the posters advising AP classes freshmen year. Most freshmen are NOT ready for college-level work. Even smart freshmen are just not ready. It’s definitely worth it to hold off a year and take your first AP class sophomore year.

Get pointless graduation requirements out of the way early! Seriously. It’s not at all fun to be the only senior in a gym class full of freshmen or in an art class you hate in your last year. Just get them out of the way, older you will thank little you for it! Not only will older you not have to suffer through a class he/she hates senior year with a bunch of freshmen, older you will have the opportunity to take more AP classes or a class older you has genuine interest in.

People are saying Don’t Procrastinate! but how do you NOT procrastinate?
I need to use my phone/laptop for school work (maybe to Google information, or use the dictionary), but then I end up texting, or on CC or ESPN.com.

Go to the library and use dictionaries and encyclopedias in book form.
Either that or grant yourself fifteen minutes to do what you want, and then go back to studying.

awesomeril: Thanks! The note taking advice was helpful! My Honors Bio teacher next year has us take our own notes by whatever he resents while the other Honors Bio teacher lets them have fill-in the blank notes! that’s so unfair! But its not like I can’t ask my friends for study material and It’ll help me for harder courses I guess… I procrastinate so much!!! Its not even funny…I did my hw in my 8th grade Latin class because the teacher didn;t even care…If you show up to the class u get an A…but I’ll tryreally hard because I really care about doing well next year…and lol and scared about screwing u my freshman year and worrying about the taint on
my transcript all through high school… I agree Repede was being unfair… but U guys have experienced a lot more of the AP and College Worrying high school than I have so I can see where he is coming from…

bhchamp: I hope I can!

ClassOf2015HS: Thanks! It probably is because everyone here is in at least their junior year? idk. They probably wish they had a similar amount of work as they did in freshman year…

baileyj57: U took Algebra 2 in freshman year? Wow! That’s really advance… I think a B is Ok (if its your only one) and that u raised it from a D shows good work ethic…My school doesnt offer AP classes until sophomore year which are only AP Stats and AP Music Theory… And I don;t know if I would do if my school did…i mean i still would have wanted to get a good ranking…My school has this stupid technology requirement that i didnt take this year…I ll make sure I take it next year!

College123college: hahaha that’s exactly my problem…i think if you have a really strong motivation and imagine getting an A on that test…then you’ll procrastination frequency will decrease…

I wanted to thank everyone for helping me out…I am a little less worried

BTW My EC’s are
Theater (1-3 shows and maybe some technical work)
DECA (business competition…im sure ur all familiar with)
Soccer (probably make the freshman team…I should get varsity sophomore or junior year)
Maybe a couple smaller clubs…(science club, community service team…) if i have time

Does anyone have any other suggestions about these (should I cut/add more) I would like to have a leadership position in something…I was the treasurer of student council in 8th grade except I don;t know i f I can do everything…

Lunchtime is homework time.

When you have free time, ask yourself, “Could I be getting a head start on anything right now?”

Don’t stress too much about grades. At my school, a 92.5% and above is an A. Some people shoot for 98%, but know that a high and a low A show up the same on a transcript.

Find EC’s early, not in the middle of junior year.

Ramen is delicious.

Watch the upperclassmen who graduate before you. See what schools they go to and what they do to get there.

Having a social life is healthy and boosts morale.

This.

Also, I noticed that I have trouble getting used to the teachers and how they work at the beginning of each semester. I think it’s because 1st semester and 2nd semester are right after major breaks (summer and winter). I usually get A-'s the first/third quarter, but then I bring them up to mostly A+'s and some A’s by the end of the semester. Obviously this is really stressful having to bring my grades up, so how can I not suck at the beginning of the year?

@StarJazzy
Here’s what I’d advise when it comes to planning your extracurricular: passion

It’s the ability to stand out from hundreds of other applicants that have applications that are nearly identical to yours. When we hear of all the cancer researchers, teen CEO’s, etc, immediately, the question that pops into your head is “how were they able to do that?” You’ve just done the failed-simulation test: an increased sense of impressiveness is applied to those extracurriculars when you’re unable to recreate the steps doing them.

It doesn’t mean that they’re more intelligent than you are or that they were blessed with more resources. However, it means that they were able to gain footing into closed “communities” that aren’t readily available to students, be it the unassuming research lab at your local college, the invisible internship, etc. Now you maybe asking yourself “how do I do that exaclty?”

Simple. Don’t plan the steps through since its likely that someone else can too. However, you should align the potential extracurricular to an interest/potential career path. If you like history, go ask for a research position with a professor. If you like biology, shadow a doctor. If you’re interested in finance, start a business. If these positions aren’t readily available (meaning that you’re likely to have a door slammed at your face), prod further and prove yourself. The more able you are to put in hours of dedication that are unasked of you, to prove yourself, the more impressive it is not to mention that you’re doing something you enjoy.

There’s a book that further explains this called “How to be a High School Superstar” and I HIGHLY advise it. I have a link if you’re interested

Thanks awesomeirl! Can u PM me the link? I an interested in biology but I’m still exploring other options such as business…I’ll keep ur advice in mind

Why is everyone hating on procrastination. If you are good at it, it is awesome. I can write solid research papers in a good 4 hours the night before they are due and get a far better grade most of my classmates who started the day it was given. (about 2 weeks before)

Procrastination got me an A+ on a 4 page paper, so I see no problem with it…

Generally I think procrastination is okay, but I think it’s preferable that you don’t procrastinate on writing assignments, at least not all the time. Colleges may ask for a writing sample from a class assignment (like an English paper), so you really want your English writing to be amazing, at least once in awhile. And that takes time, even if you’re a good writer.

how do i get into the college of my choice? maybe you could help me with that. im a senior as well.

Because not procrastinating is less stressful and gets you more sleep Why not write the paper in four hours days before it’s due and be done with it?

Plus you also have extra time to revise, let your teacher see it, etc.

Because I work better under pressure.

“Plus you also have extra time to revise, let your teacher see it, etc.”
What’s revising? What’s editing?
