An Atheist at Holy Cross

Hi guys.

I am a prospective classics student, and I am interested in the program at Holy Cross. However, I am also off put by the name.

As an atheist, will I be all alone at Holy Cross? I am very tolerant of other's beliefs, but I also don't want to be the only one of my friends who isn't going to mass every Sunday. I have great respect for the art, music, and history of the Catholic Church, but Catholicism just isn't for me. Will this stop me from fitting in well at Holy Cross?

You won’t be the only atheist, but I believe you’ll have to take part in some biblical classes. I know students who practice Islam or Judaism who have fit in, but I don’t think it would be the right school for you.

Holy Cross is a Jesuit school like Georgetown and the Jesuits have a long tradition of tolerance and liberalism with respect to the Catholic faith. Holy Cross seeks diversity in its students and faculty and like most selective liberal arts schools all faiths or no faiths are welcome. HC does foster community volunteering and the sense of school pride is strong. The HC website is informative.

Nope, I’m an atheist and so are many of my friends. The experience is as Catholic as you make it. I was put off by the name at first, but once I visited the school the name was unimportant.

Thanks you everyone. I’ll visit campus and check it out, but based on what you said I’m not sure that it would be a good fit for me.
