An Average Asian kid with bad GPA's chances

dude in the long run 60 bucks is nothing if you think you have a chance at a high up college. Even at Udel he would be paying about 15k a year, like 250 times 60 bucks.

I agree that Columbia isnt worth it, but thats really the only one

Am I really being pessimistic?

Hanakahans, are the GPA's you listed cumulative? If so, maybe you do have a chance.. they show improvement.. maybe you should post your gpa for separate years so we can see how dramatic the improvement was?

The verbal SATs remain very low (out of league with the colleges he lsited), and his writing is below 580 (shouldnt be that big of a factor). His math score is extremely good, though.

The EC's aren't that great either.. i'm not sure where habdragon08 got that.. all I see are things like 'math tutoring'.. 'guitar tutoring' (worthless things unless you taught hours and hours and made lots and lots of money, or something..) I like the skateboarding, but he doesn't have any awards to back them up... (his essay might change that, however)

Sorry, I sound really bitter right now.

I guess I am bitter.... people with 4.0's get rejected from Columbia (one of my friends did)... 18 people applied to Stanford at my school (most of them National Merit semifinalists) and only 2 got accepted.

College admissions is tough, and I think it's silly to apply to elite private colleges when you may not be academically qualified.

His EC's aren't the BEST ec's around, but they are pretty good. Devoting 11 hours a week to solely tutoring is good. Some of your Ec's i still believe are a bit iffy, like you spend 4 hours a day on the guitar? While still tutoring 3 diff subjects a week? You should apply to all of these schools because 60 dollars really won't matter in the long run. My question I have for you is, you aren't taking many Aps, why is your GPA so low? Especially with a 800 sat math

THANK YOU everyone, for your responses.. i really appreciate it..

i really do play guitar 4hrs/day.. when I started playing guitar, I still get to do other things cuz i take some hours off my sleep time..(around 3am to 6am) maybe i should explain that on a separate sheet to convince them to belive me..

Yes, apps are expensive.. I received 4 application fee wavers and i have some money saved for guitar things and recording things.. ahh how sad.. j/k lol

I am aware of my academic qualifications, but what motivates me to try anyway is those very few unique people who got into top skools without the ultra mammoth stats.. (i consider myself pretty unique and it's included in the essay..) but I took Columbia and Vanderbilt off my list..

I didn’t believe that skool is the most important part of life.. I guess I didn’t want to be another robot that live for skool.. Some people manage to live excellent social life outside skool at same time though.. I didn’t like the way some of my teachers taught.. but who like all teachers? I thought honors and APs would be too hard for me like.. hard to the extreme.. Now that I am actually taking APs, I don’t think they are much harder than CPs.. and feel like I really should have taken harder courses..

But why is my GPA so low anyway with not many hard courses? I don’t consider myself to be hardcore-procrastinator, but I’m more of a hard science kid in the brain.. I seem to like clear definite answers.. lol and I was a kind of kid who didn't do works at all when I thought the works given are stupid or very unnecessary, I didn’t do them. (I had my own little standard which i still have, in which if I’m satisfied, that’s good enough) For example, I thought if I know things, what’s the purpose of doing homeworks? Waste of my time and nothing else maybe.. Moving to ghetto-er neighborhood (it sucked..) ,family disputes, and other mehhh.. personal things kinda shook me up there too.. things are getting better though.. =P

My current school (white majority skool with asian population: approximately 0.1%, I’m one of the two) is pretty new and we had only few AP courses until this year.. we didn't even have pre-calc until last year(my class was the first class offered to take the class)

I wish I could have taken prep courses.. but no complain about that.. some people still manage to get perfect or near perfect score without taking courses.

Now, many people may say that I don’t belong to top skools but to community college, but I would like to get top notch education among a bunch of smart kids studying what I really want.

U Chicago is my first choice skool.. I want to go there and live in Chicago badly. =0..

Honest critics are welcome.

You better change that when to get to college. :)

Just be sure to keep some safeties in case you are denied admission everywhere else.

Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas =)

NO offense, but Idont think you have much of a shot at any honors programs with your GPA to those schools

also Penn state admissions are heavily based on GPA... 2/3 GPA I believe is the number they give out?

with a 1410/~3.0 you will seem a bit like a slacker, considering PSU doesnt look at much besides numbers

Idk about any of the other schools since you sound pretty interesting (b.c. u r not hte typical bookwormy type) but I don't think you will get into any of hte honor system. Im from maryland and I know college park's honor's system is very formulatic...its just GPA+SAT(combined)+other consideration. So Yeah, you might get into the school but I doubt u'll get in the honor's program since ppl with 3.6s are even rejected.

thank you,
My skool's office people have been doing last-minute cramming, fixing and calculating about 200kids' GPAs from other skools(about half of my class transferred sometime).. cuz we have this weird and different grade system. I got dissed from the office and was just told that colleges calculate GPAs by themselves anyway.. so it doesn't matter much.. I HOPE that's true..
my cumulative unweighted GPA for first three years is about 3.1 if they fixed it right.. (i don't know weighted GPA, cuz.. we got new software system from the state and the office people are still "working on it"..)

3 Qs:
I heard that if i apply for the honors admission and get rejected, i get considered for regular admission automatically.. does anyone know if this is true?
Also, i heard that many colleges ignore freshman year's GPA and think of it as transition year from middle skool. is this right?
Does interviews really help with getting admitted? I heard that it shows that you are really interested and motivated.

Good luck to everyone doing their apps during the break.

You have no shot at Columbia University. However, your chances are good at Columbia College in Missouri.

lol.. i'm not applying to Columbia U and i don't have plan to waste $25 or an app fee waver on the mini-skool.

...boom...p

^^^ bump ^^^

I don't think you will get into University of Chicago

but look at University of Loyola Chicago

nice campus, right in Chicago, good education

stats look like a match.

Guitar 4hr/day... intense..

Thank you,
University of Chicago is my top choice, because I want to major in Physics.
