This seems horrible. The place uses horrible punishment, a crooked physiologist who believes that kids sent to foster homes had something to do with it themselves, employs brainwashing and mass hysteria, and kids are encouraged to shoot each other down and point out each others flaws. The article even talks about one girl who was going to Harvard but got sent here instead because of choosing the wrong boyfriend!

Wow. So Orwellian. The comments and brainwashing, especially.

The whole time I was reading that I kept thinking of ways that this place could be declared illegal.

1) Torture is against the law, isn't it? Is it illegal in Jamaica too? This case is like extraordinary rendition, if anyone has heard of that - where the American government sends suspected "terrorists" into other friendly countries with more lax laws and interrogates them through torture.

2) Slavery, maybe? Slavery could be defined as a situation like this where you have no freedom of movement or action. Perhaps being a minor would void that, though.

I dunno. These crackpots are trying to exploit a loophole in the legal system. Sick, sick, SICK. Let's put that Kay dude into his own "programme" for a while and see what he thinks of it.

WOW
The girl lied down, flat on her face, for 18 months.. without moving a muscle and talking..

I can't even lie down on my bed, very still, for more than 4 min because my muscles start to feel weird and stuff.

JayKay is crazy. He's a dropout also :P

But in a way, if these kids turn out like angels, it must be..ok? Except this goes under child abuse and i hate hate hate hate hate child abuse. i cant stand it.

That sounds awful. I would really be worried for the kids who went through that. What would they become after the program? From a psychological standpoint, I'm guessing that it's probably not healthy to live on such a rigid routine for a long period of time.

You don't permanently "change" people by putting them through torture. If anything, this type of treatment would most likely result in great behavior for a while, but anger/resentment/phobias in the long run. I mean, imagine how these kids would feel about their parents in 10 or 20 years. There's probably going to be a lot of hate or fear or anger.

And is this even legal? The way they treat the kids seems an awful lot like the way the way they hold POW's...

Wow! It is amazing what people will do to other people! It is even more amazing that parents will pay for this type of "treatment," but I guess it shouldn't be. It deeply saddens me. The way they treat people would not be legal if the "students" were in the US, but I'm not clear on Jamaica law.

Heck, you generally can't even hold kids against their will for mental health reasons at an approved facility in most states once they reach a certain age--in HI age 16!

WWWWWAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOO THIS PLACE CANT EXIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is whacko. I was just imagining how i wold respond if i was taken over there. i'd kill somebody. i really would.

I was thinking about that too. If presented with the choice of committing some crime (hopefully a non-destructive one) that would get you out of Tranquility and into juvie, would you do it?

can such a place even exist today???? sounds much like fiction story where and while reading it i half expected for some guy to rebel and all tht stuff and bring changes for the goood!!

ridiculous how some kids seem to have no regrets of goin to tht place!!! they certainly do seem to completely rewire their brains....!

Now this is my kind of school! The only thing id say they are missing though are those electric chair desks so that if you answer a question wrong, youll get zapped.

jimmy, I definetly would commit a crime to get into juvie.
I wouldn't kill someone, I would proabably stab someone's arm or theigh. But would they even send you to juvie? The staff would proabably stab me all over my body or something for punishment..

1st question that popped into my head...is the Guardian a reputable newspaper? If it is, well...

If I were sent to that place I would kill the entire staff of that place to get out. I really believe I would.
That Jon Kay guy should be put through his own program and should be taught to be subservient to little children. That'd teach him a lesson. Maybe while he's there he could re-learn what he apparently didn't learn in high school.

A California court ruled that the place is legal to send kids to...figures... um...yeah...

Btw, yanners, I totally agree w/ what you said. That place opened in 1997 so the long-term consqeuences are gonna be bad.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. In debate we frequently research evidence from international newspapers, and the Guardian is a popular source of reliable evidence. It's a British newspaper comparable to the New York Times.
