My son's top 2 acceptance choices are Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and Colorado School of Mines. Mines was his first choice early on, but after having great tours of both, Rose is looking like a great fit.
My questions are ...
1. How up-to-date is the Engineering technology&equipment at Rose vs. Mines?
2. How much academic and administrative communication & support can we expect from Mines vs. Rose?
3. What are the rentention and graduation rates of each?

First of all Rose has been much better at communicating with us with letter, emails, calls etc. They have freely shown true interest in getting our son to enroll. Their small class sizes and hands on teaching also distinguishes them. On the down side, some of the facilities like the dorms, library and window-less claustraphobic classrooms were not especially impressive. Yet overall the campus has a good spirit to it. Mines has a very beautiful campus, a strong reputation, and we were duly impressed with the campus tour we took last November. Yet ever since then, they have not done a good job communicating with us. This is in stark contrast to ALL other schools who have sent regular emails, letters and even phone calls. Our experience with Mines we had to continually call and check in despite their stated “rolling admission”. Even when we were told an acceptance letter was mailed, it was surprising that no emails went out with the usual “Congratulations” “Welcome”, “student log in ID”, FAQ’s etc .

My S is visiting Rose April 19. They have been excellent regarding all communication. They are head and shoulders above all his other accepted schools communication wise. They are very impressive with emails, calls and letters. Very clear and nice people throughout.

Coming down to price to choose them. I’ll let you know by May.

Communications has been a hallmark of the RHIT admissions department for a long time. It impressed my parents back in 1981 when I was considering going there. If it feels like the right fit, it is an excellent school.

My daughter is looking at the same schools. We live in Colorado. We are hoping for merit based scholarships but heard mines only gives $2500 max for instate and $12,500 for out of state. Any ideas on scholarship from Rose Hulman? Her stats - 4.0 unweighted, 4.3 weighted, ACT 35, top 10 percent ranking in HS.

Depends on the engineering. Anything really earth/environmental related hands down mines. Other than that, hulman wins out

streicher5 - we are in state and my son got $5000/year (and was invited to apply to both full-tuition scholarships - we don’t have answers on those yet). He had a 34 ACT, 1 of 227 class rank, 5.0/4.0 and 32 CC credits (will have 55 when he goes in).
