Rose Hulman 2014 -who did you turn down

Okay, I know you are all going to think poorly of me, but I have been wanting to ask this for some time--

What colleges have people turned down to attend RHIT? I am speaking of colleges you got into, not just applied?

I am concerned--it seems that RHIT is many sstudents "second choice" or even safety school. I know it has a great reputation--I just am really curious about this.

Who here for class of 2014 had this as a first choice and who did you turn down?

98% sure my son will be going to Rose.

Schools he was accepted to and is turning down: University of Colorado-engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Case Western (with a $22, 500 annual scholarship-ouch!) University of Miami-engineering($20K annual scholarship), Clemson-engineering.

4 of the 5 schools he is turning down cost less than Rose. That is a big part of our delay in deciding. I hope Rose is worth the extra dollars! What do CC viewers think?

I think it is. My good friend’s brother went to RH over schools that were less exp. in Colorado (specifically Mines and CU Boulder), and is now graduating this year with a guaranteed job with a $80,000+ starting salary. He says it’s worth it for the experience and what he got out of it, even though RH cost more, and I would have to agree.

99.9% sure I’m going to Rose-Hulman.
Turning down: UChicago, Northwestern, John Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, CU Boulder, Mines, DU [except for the last 3, all of the schools are comparable price to RH. The last 3 are my safeties in my home state, where the cost is significantly less]
Took myself off the waitlist at: Berkeley, Harvery Mudd, Caltech, WashU

My son is pretty sure he will be choosing Rose–it has always been his top choice. He would be turning down Univ. of Michigan, Rensselaer, Purdue, and our local/state university (was offered full tuition).

mom4, very intereresting. What was son’s thought process in excluding UM, RPI, and Purdue? local / state rejection of full ride is interesting , too. I assume it was not a school with a nom in engineering such as UIUC.

[another question quickly - I assume son wants to be an engineer, true? Can one be something other than an engineer at RH? can pm me if u want]

@roderick

First of all when my son attended Operation Catapult, Rose-Hulman left him with a great first impression that has been hard for other schools to beat. In fact, if you have a child that is interested in Rose, the time to attend is after the junior year.

I don’t know if you have visited the campus, but what has been said on these forums about how Rose is different is very accurate and is best understood by a visit. Everything Rose does is top-notch and is meant to guide, direct, and help the students succeed.

You are correct–our local/state school does not have an engineering school that is known nationally.

As to being something other than an engineer at Rose, there are the math and science majors. My son wants to major in engineering, so I can’t really answer your questions about the other majors. However, I’m sure that the appropriate department at Rose would be more than willing to give you whatever information you need. Furthermore, an undergraduate degree can be a great stepping stone for various other graduate degrees such as MD, MBA, and JD.

I’ll be turning down RPI, Carnegie Mellon, and URochester to come to Rose-Hulman. I am 98% sure I’ll be attending. ^_^

It’s interesting because my brother is attending Univ. of Michigan and loves it there, although, personally, I’m not very interested in that school. I think it’s all about taste and how you view as an ideal college experience.

wow, Mozart Man …that is an impressive list.

You are really turing down CMU???I am in awe.

My son has done summer classes at U of R and was not impressed. He REALLY did not like RPI.

BUT CMU …

@hollyanne CMU is a great school! Sure it has great academics and activities. I know quite a few people personally who currently attend and will attend; however, they are not the best of friends and co-workers (for various reasons from classroom experiences). But don’t get me wrong, there are many great people who go to CMU.

What appealed to me about RHIT is its emphasis to conglomerate students into one supportive environment, both academically and professionally. I was talking to a friend about politics and game theory the other day, and he was supporting the idea of competitive success, while I was arguing for collaborative happiness… You take your pick ^_^.

Also using the same relationship you started the thread with, there are also people who consider CMU a safety. RHIT is different than CMU in that it requires a much greater internal desire to study in the RHIT environment (so you can imagine what types of people go where). Rose is definitely a lot different than CMU, and it really depends again what you want in a school.

Mozart Man,thank you so much for your perspective. It is really interesting.
CMU was my sons “dream school,” so it seems hard to believe there are people turning it down. Your response really got me thinking. My son has narrowed his choice to RIT and Rose. Rose will be a financial hardship for our family, but it intrigues us to the point where we just can’t let it go. I will be so glad when this decision is over…

My son is likely to turn it down - too expensive. Planning to go to UC San Diego.

I have turned down:
Georgia Tech
UIUC
U of Michigan
Kettering
Franklin W.Olin
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
Rice

Universities that turned me down :frowning: :
University of California Berkeley
University of Texas-Austin
Cooper Union

Turned down all these Universities for either:

 1. RHIT
 2. Imperial College London
 3. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Waiting to hear from:
National University of Singapore

My first choice is HKUST where I have a full scholarship for, and it is the University with the Max potential of becoming the best. My second choice is Imperial which has the strongest brand name out of all that I have listed. And my third choice is RHIT because it is the strongest US University on my list, after UCB.

Can anyone help me pick one from the 3 I have listed at the end ?

Thanks!

I’m 100% sure that I’m going to RH and I’ve turned down Georgia Tech, UIUC, and Purdue.

They are all good schools too, but there are two main reasons why I’ve turned them down. First is that I always wanted to attend smaller schools, and the second is that Rose-Hulman seems to provide so many opportunities to its students. Not that the other schools don’t, but I was impressed by its Fast-Track Calculus program and all the internships available.

jinny91: Thats really cool ! I turned down the same Unis as you and hopefully for RHIT…

oh my, I am so out of things. First I hear someone turning down Carnegie Mellon, and now someone turning down RICE!!! Son didn’t even attempt to apply to Rice!

What I can’t figure out with all these great schools being turned down is–why is the average SAT and ACT scores so low at RHIT? My older daughter had a 35 ACT and was waitlisted at RICE –
Yet the average ACT at RHIT is somewhere around 30. I am not getting this.

And as far as fast track calc–I don’t really get there completely either. The literature we got said that if you had already taken AP Calc and gotten a 4 or 5 fast track calc was really not that great of a bargain–because you would already have 10 of the 15 credits. My son took AP Calc as a 10th grader which I know is unusual , but not unheard of, at least here. So he is way beyond fast track calc at this point. But wouldn’t there be several others also beyond this if RHIT gets some of the brightest minds in the country? Why does eveyone make such a big deal of this?

Someone explain to this me!

This thread is anecdotal, not systematic.

Perhaps there are hundreds of people who are turning down RHIT to go to the other colleges mentioned. These people would not post here.

Similarly, there may be many students who did not get into the colleges mentioned and are turning down some unknown, undistinguished colleges to go to RHIT. I suspect that these people would not be strongly motivated to post here either.

Many students at Rose did not have the opportunity to take calculus as early as your son did. For instance, I didn’t have the opportunity to take calculus at all in high school. Fast Track isn’t for everyone, but if you’ve had some calc in high school and want to get ahead it’s a good program.

ADad makes a great point ^_^.

Hollyanne, I truly believe higher SAT & ACT scores don’t necessarily mean one enjoys a subject more than someone who didn’t get as high a test score. For the most part, there are many people I know who stress way too much on standardized testing and don’t have enough time to figure out what they want to do with their lives (I got a 2300 w/e that’s worth…IMHO, it means nothing at all -_-). But then again, I’m pretty radical; I actually wanted to spend several “precious” years in a desert :)

My D knows 3 people who turned down MIT for Rose, not this year but in years past. Gotta love this school.

cheezwhiz: Me turning down GTech and Michigan is still understood but I acn’t believe people would turn down MIT!! Thats jst great!! :O
