An idiot's thread (chances, ugh)

I know, I know...I hate chances threads too. But the thing is, i don't want to apply to Yale unless my chances are well above average. Otherwise I'll spend my $75 on an easier school. Don't get me wrong, I think yale kicks butt, but it is sorta late and i can only apply to, like, one more school. So I kinda would like to know what you think:

White, male, good-looking (well, cute at least)

Mediocre, medium-sized public high school in rural Northern NY state. I don't think anyone's gotten into Yale in the past 20 years at least.

SAT: 1470,2190 (800 M, 670 CR, 720 W)
SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Chem, 700 Lit
ACT: 32
GPA: 98.5% (it's sorta weighted, but not the same as everyone else's. We can't go over 100 in any class even with the curve)
Rank: 1/224
Most rigorous courseload (a whopping 4 AP classes)
AP US history (the only one I've taken thus far) - scored 4
On the NY regents exams, i got 6 100s, 2 99s, and 2 98s.
National merit commended student

I took all standardized tests ONCE.

ECs:

1 Bass trombonist in NY state (all-eastern, all-state, etc.)

I also play tenor trombone, tuba, and to some extent a couple random instruments
**sending music supplement w/cd
Habitat for Humanity President and former treasurer
Cross-country; captain grades 11-12; named honorable mention league all-star in a tough league
Track; went to state qualifiers in steeplechase
Wrestling in 12th grade only just for fun
Whiz Quiz (Local tv quiz show) - last year our team won, but it's just for our region of NY state
Math league -- i came in 2nd from our school in 9th grade, 1st in 10th and 11th grade
Science Olympiad
NHS

Intended majors: Music or math, probably
Career goals: possibly be a musical composer(??)
Essays: really good, i think, but i don't know
Recs: pretty standard except my calc teacher who raved about me being a "genius" and a billion other things.

Last year 5.8% of RD applicants were admitted. So, to answer your question, Clendenenator, yes, I would indeed like fries with that.

Umm...wow. That was really sweet of you.
Anybody else?

I hesitate to say that anyone's chances are "well above average" because let's be serious, everyone who applies here is really ****ing impressive. do I think you have a good chance? yes. but does that really mean anything? no. honestly, it's all about showing yale you're really enthusiatic about what you do and you're enthusiastic about yale. I would definitely apply if I were you (clearly I did). good luck.

what other schools would you apply to in place of yale? you should probably do it on a comparison basis. If you really like Yale more than any others that you haven't applied to, then by all means.

But if your other choices are schools with acceptance rates like Georgetown or Johns Hopkins, you'd be better off applying to the other school if you must choose one.

Well, the thing is...i really ****ed up my college list early on and now none of the schools I'm applying to allow me to do what i want. I want to get a BA in music from a school with emphasis in composition. My list includes schools that don't offer BAs in music, schools that stink at music, and a school i got deferred from already. It's down to Yale or Penn, basically, and I think i could get into penn (well, hopefully), but yale is way out there. I'd like yale more than penn, though. So i dunno...it's a tough choice. Unless someone told me that Yale was actively recruiting bass trombonists......

"well above average"

I'm sorry, but no one has that luxury, except for maybe athletes and extremely qualified legacies. Unless you really want to go there, (or really want to know if you could get in there) I wouldn't apply. It never hurts to do so, but from how you express your feelings for this school, it doesn't seem that the $75 are worth it to you to apply. If you do apply, I would recommend taking at least the SAT's once more. January is the last chance for the RD round.

I wish we had steeplechase where I live lol.

wow, it won't say the f word. this is ridiculous.

I wouldn't say well above average, after all there are people with 2400's, superb recommendations, and who are intenseley inivolved with EC's who still get rejected. If you want to get a good idea of people who have gotten in/been deferred, take a look at the stats thread. If you can only apply to one college and you really need that college to be a place where you will probably get in, I don't know if Yale is the best choice, however, Yale is awesome, and people from all over the spectrum get in, so there is always a chance for everybody, and if your heart is really in the school, go for it!

Chances threads won't tell you what you want to know about your candidacy... but if you want to know whether your 75$ would be a waste or not, well, you have no chance of getting in if you don't apply.

You know, i know i won't get in, but i think i'll still apply to yale anyway and not to penn. Why? I'm not sure, but whatever.

wow eli, bitter much?

Steeple chase is a *****.

Clen, I didn't mean for my comment to be personal. You really are an excellent candidate (I commented on another chances thread of yours before, and I believe it was positive). I was just trying to convey that no matter how superbly qualified you are, you will still probably be rejected from Yale. 95% of RD applicants get rejected; that's just how it is. You definitely have above average chances, but that may or may not be good enough. It is so difficult to get in that it becomes random, and that's that. Best of luck, you will most definitely end up great. I did not mean to imply that you are going to end up serving up fries...it was just a rather caustic expression of the improbability of acceptance to Yale. Sorry.

Wow. You have my first SAT score, with the exact same section scores and all. AND my first ACT score. WHO THE HELL ARE YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY IDENTITY?!?!

<sorry, i="" don't="" rate="" chances="" threads.="" that's="" all="" had="" to="" say=""></sorry,>

No hard feelings eli. I got deferred, too, so..i know how you feel.

Oh, you got deferred? Nevermind, then. Your chances are a good deal higher than 5.8%. Closer to 10%, according to the stats people are throwing around. Yay!

No i got deferred at another school ::hides face in shame::

Looking back on it, i'm not sure why i picked that school over yale.
