An Open Letter to Chandler -- Cornell v. Williams

right…i have a feeling this board would host chandlerbingnight :D

we should apply for a 5k CUnight commission :D

Chronic

Don’t scare him away!

If Chandler chooses Cornell…I’ll tack on an extra $50 to my contribution to the Cornell Annual Fund ;)

I’ll match Dew’s offer as well!

Chandler – If you don’t choose Cornell, the University will be poorer, and not only because you will not be studying far above Cayuga’s waters…

Think of the Annual Fund Chandler!

Jolizath- why would you think that? Williams is an excellent school…

Chandler- go where you feel you belong (but I really hope it’s Cornell :)

Clearly he will analyze all information and go where he thinks best given who he is vis a vis these two choices. Whether Williams or Cornell, just hope that he makes the right choice for him, that’s what’s important.

Wow, guys, this is overwhelming.
I didn’t even know that there are so many ChandlerBing supporters! (Matthew Perry would be proud ;))

I know that Cornell would be a wonderful place for me, but I also know that Williams would be too.
I’m going to give each school a fair shot during visitation days, and see the pros and cons of each before making a decision.
I’ll be honest: I am actually leaning towards Williams at the moment (despite the utter epicness of this thread). However, Cornell is most definitely going to be SERIOUSLY considered when I visit for Cornell Day (sans the s, grr @ Red Carpet Society).

Three things are in Cornell’s favor at this point:

 1. Money. I haven’t gotten my FA package from Williams yet, but I’m assuming it’ll be ridiculously expensive. Cornell notified me that I didn’t qualify for aid (woooo…) but with HumEc reduced tuition 35,000 a year is the price tag. I don’t see Williams being less expensive than 40-45,000 for me.

2) Diversity. Cornell is the definition of diverse. I love diversity: a diversity of ethnicities, races, cultures, attitudes, outlooks on life, you name it I love it. I know that Williams is diverse as well, but a college of 2100 kids can’t match the diversity of one with ~14,000.

3) Class offerings. Cornell has EVERYTHING. Though, a turnoff for me is that I can’t major/minor (only concentrate, if I’m lucky) in something outside of HumEc. HBHS is an awesome major, but I also want to double major in Spanish and minor in Chinese in college. This would be limited to a “concentration” or just a few classes on my transcript at Cornell. However, I’m sure that Cornell has a much wider variety of interesting classes to take than Williams does.

Thank you so much for all this support, and to pageturner and SVMMom: I’ve talked to you two since the ED days, and I really wish your kids were offered admission. However, a GT is still a great achievement, and I congratulate you! It’s been a rough ride.

About the deferral/clouding my decision, it’s not the fact that they deferred me that’s made me not 100% committed to going to Cornell, that would just be shallow, it’s the fact that I had to let go of Cornell back in December, and I started to fall in love with other colleges out of sheer necessity. I didn’t expect to get in after being deferred, so I had to stop researching Cornell dorms and go out and write those other college essays, etc.
It’ll be a tough decision, but I thank all of you deeply for this thread (which I don’t deserve, seeing as I had 3 weeks to write a research paper and was forced to write the entire thing last night. Fie on Kate Chopin!)

Do you seriously not want to here my jokes? I am offended.

Your jokes are definitely a consideration, haha :)

Wow, I just read all of you guys’ posts again and I am HUMBLED and HONORED! I just want to hug y’all (and I don’t say things like that lightly, I’m not too into the whole hugging thing).

And I think I’d just about die if there was a Chandler Bing Night at Cornell, lmao!

Is it too late to order t shirts for all admitted students - “I am Chandler Bing”

Maybe I will stipulate on my donation that there must be a ChandlerBing night :D

I think there will be a chandlerbing night regardless of your matriculation, the real question is whether or not you will be burned in effigy!

Your perceived differences between a major/minor/concentration is a non-issue. What matters is whether or not you can take the courses and pursue the subjects that interest you. And the good news for you is not only does Cornell have an amazing Spanish department, but it is widely seen as the best school in the country for Asian language instruction.

But yes, you can minor/concentrate in both Chinese and Spanish and both would show up ‘officially’ on your transcript.

I would buy one of those t-shirts in a heart beat!

To be honest, I’ve read posts to the effect that languages are not a strong suit at Williams, from these same alumni CC posters. You might want to check that out, in depth, with specifics as to your intended languages of interest.

Cayuga: Your ability to utilize Cornell’s resources and statement that those who do not are not taking advantage of what they have been given has made me anxious. I really would love to be able to harness the resources here (I am a freshman in ILR), but I really do not know how exactly to approach it as I am not really sure what I am interested in exactly or maybe I am not creative enough to come up with anything to play off my interests. Any suggestions on taking advantage of world class research, etc.?

@ grantortue - I wasn’t dissing Williams in anyway, my cousin goes there and loves it.

I just thought Chandler was always a hardcore Cornell fan, but I get what he is saying about moving on to other schools after getting deferred because the same thing happened to me with Penn.

Sure. As a freshman you should be exploring any and all clubs that you are vaguely interested in (from French Film Club to the Rugby Team), attending random lectures that sound interesting, and making an effort to interact with faculty/staff outside of the classroom.

By the time you reach sophomore winter, you should have a pretty good sense of who you are and what you are interested in. You can then pursue specific projects or funding opportunities to do research, study abroad, take upper-level courses, or apply for internships, the like.

The key is to keep engaged. If you are just going to class and doing your homework, you likely should be trying to push yourself a bit more.

Tralfamadore huh? You a Kurt Vonnegut fan? ;)
